Matej Dodig #138Croatia22 – 1Marco Cecchinato #164Italy1

Dodig's first round was played, a day after Cecchinato's, so the 21-year-old carries both the heavier recent volume and the shorter turnaround into this match. Ten clay matches in 14 days is the largest block either player has contested this month, against three matches for Cecchinato in the same window, one of them a first-round loss in Braga. No physical problem has been reported and Dodig's Lisbon opener lasted only 14 games, so this is accumulated volume to monitor rather than a stated limitation, and it is the clearest difference between two players separated by 26 ranking places.

The win followed defeats to players ranked outside the top 400 and a first-round exit in Braga, so it is his only recent evidence of form at this level. Beating a higher-ranked opponent who had beaten him in August says more about his current level than the ranking gap alone, and it came in straight sets without a deciding set. One win does not establish an upturn: he has eight victories in his last 15 matches and had lost three in a row before Monday, so the direction of his form remains unresolved.

The split sets show the match was settled by a one-sided third set rather than a straightforward mismatch, and the meeting came 18 months ago when both players were ranked differently. A single Challenger match on clay is thin evidence for a repeat, but it is the only direct sample of how these two games fit together, and it sits alongside a wider gap in current form and in recent match volume.
