Marco Cecchinato #163Italy22 – 0Vilius Gaubas #141Lithuania0

The Braga match is the closest template for Lisbon: Cecchinato took a second-set tiebreak before losing the decider, so on clay this has been a one-set gap rather than a rout. Both straight-sets wins came in August hard-court qualifying, where Cecchinato's clay-built patterns carry less weight, so the 3-0 is not a single uniform trend. What it does establish is that Gaubas has repeatedly found a way through the same serve and one-handed backhand. The limitation is level: three best-of-three matches at Challenger and qualifying standard, none on the main tour.

Catania is the heavier of the two defeats: Cecchinato entered an Italian Challenger as the No. 1 seed and was beaten in straight sets by a qualifier ranked nearly 400 places below him. With the 7-6(4) 6-0 Braga exit to No. 423 Olle Wallin a week earlier, he arrives in Lisbon with two completed matches and no wins in the five weeks since Szczecin, where he beat Henri Squire and Marvin Moeller before losing 7-6(6) 7-5 to Marco Trungelliti. That September week shows the level is intact, so the open question is sustaining it; the second-set bagel against Wallin is the detail that cuts the other way.

Six completed matches on Portuguese clay across Braga and Maia, against two for Cecchinato over the same fortnight, is the clearest asymmetry in how the two arrive. Gaubas has already played at two Portuguese venues this month without leaving the country, so travel and conditions are familiar rather than novel. The counterweight is that the block produced no final: he led one set to nil against Boyer, ranked No. 209, three days before this match and lost in three, and the run also included a 5-7 7-6(4) 6-2 grind against Ajdukovic. Volume and surface familiarity, not silverware, are what the fortnight added.

The world No. 141 has played 11 clay matches across that window, and the two halves of his matches look quite different.

Gaubas has dropped the opening set in five of those 11 clay matches, so an early setback against Cecchinato is a realistic risk rather than a surprise. Once into the second set he has been far harder to break, winning nine of 11. In a best-of-three first round that pattern makes a slow start plausible without changing who is favoured.
