Max Alcala Gurri #138Spain00 – 2Alejo Sanchez Quilez #375Spain2

Sanchez Quilez won two three-set qualifying matches on consecutive days, 11 and, to reach the Maia main draw. That leaves him one day of recovery against an opponent who has not competed since the Braga quarter-finals, the clearest current difference in how the two arrive. A two-match qualifying load is ordinary at Challenger level, so this points to extra time on court for one player rather than an extreme workload.

Alcala Gurri won the Plovdiv Challenger without losing a set in late September, his fourth Challenger title of 2026 after Cordenons, Royan and Cervia. The run is the main evidence behind his move into the top 140 and his fifth seeding here. His most recent match was a three-set loss at Braga, so the titles describe the level he reached in September rather than a result already transferred to Maia.

Alcala Gurri started 2026 at No. 385 and reached No. 138 by October, a rise of more than 240 places in ten months. That places him well above Sanchez Quilez at No. 375 and explains why the two meet as seed and qualifier in the first round. The ranking gap is the single largest measure separating the players in this fixture.

Alcala Gurri is the fifth seed and the higher-ranked player at No. 138, and this record shows how quickly he has settled into recent clay matches.

Alcala Gurri has started recent clay matches on the front foot, which matters in a first-round match against a qualifier who needed three sets in each of his last two outings. Ten first sets from eleven completed matches is the clearest statistical difference between the two players. The sample runs only from 2 September to 9 October, and three retirements were excluded, so it describes a short window rather than a settled habit.
