Pre-match view

Context last updated 28 Sep 2026, 19:59 · Europe/Bucharest

Chengdu final: Hurkacz's serve against the man who has beaten him four times in six meetings.

Hurkacz is the likelier winner — 12-3 in his last 15 hard-court matches with 12.9 aces a match — but Davidovich Fokina holds the head-to-head and has won three matches here dropping only one set. At 1.73 Hurkacz needs about 57.8%, more than his case supports, and Davidovich Fokina at 2.1 also asks for more than his case supports; no reviewed price is worth taking.

Context

Hurkacz had reached no tour-level final since May 2025, so Chengdu is his first chance in 16 months to convert a full week into a title and the ranking points that come with it. It is also his deepest run since returning from knee surgery, which gives the result extra weight for a player rebuilding toward his former top-10 level. A win would be his ninth title and his first since Estoril 2024, ending a two-year gap at tour level. It remains a milestone rather than a proven edge in this matchup, since the Chengdu field contained only one top-20 player and the achievement says more about his current form than his ceiling.
- Hurkacz beat Denis Shapovalov 6-7(8) 6-3 6-3 in the Chengdu semi-final .
- The Chengdu final is his first ATP final since May 2025 and the 13th of his career.
- A title would be his first since Estoril 2024 and the ninth of his career.

With a US Open withdrawal on 20 August and no match since mid-July, Chengdu is Davidovich Fokina's first event in roughly ten weeks and a direct test of whether the back injury has settled. Reaching the final has already answered the availability question, because he completed three matches and recovered from a set down in the semi-final without any visible physical limit. The limitation is the standard of that opposition: his wins came against players ranked 53rd, 132nd and 121st, so the run shows rhythm and durability rather than form against a top-50 opponent. It is best read as an encouraging return rather than a settled verdict on how he will handle Hurkacz's serve.
- Davidovich Fokina withdrew from the US Open on 20 August 2026 with a back injury.
- He had not played a competitive match since 16 July 2026 before Chengdu.
- He reached the Chengdu final, his seventh tour-level final and second of 2026, in his debut at the event.

The workload into this final is uneven: Hurkacz has played four matches, three of them featuring tie-breaks, two going to a deciding set, and a semi-final of two hours and 36 minutes, while Davidovich Fokina needed only three matches and dropped a single set. On an outdoor hard court the extra sets matter because Hurkacz carries more accumulated time on court and a longer run of tight, long matches into the final. The margin is partly offset by the schedule, since both men finished their semi-finals and the final is played the following day, giving each a full recovery window. Workload therefore shapes how the match may unfold rather than deciding it.
- Hurkacz's four Chengdu matches included tie-breaks in three of them, two deciding sets and a 2h36m semi-final.
- Davidovich Fokina's three matches produced a single dropped set, with only one match going beyond two sets.

Davidovich Fokina has had the better of this pairing over five years, and four of the six meetings went to a deciding set.
The head-to-head is the strongest counterweight to Hurkacz's serving advantage: Davidovich Fokina has won four of six meetings and the most recent one, so a big serve alone has not settled this matchup. Their matches have also tended to be close, with four of the six decided in a final set.
- 1 January 2024: Davidovich Fokina won their most recent meeting 3-6 6-3 6-4.
- Six meetings are recorded between 2020 and 2024, with Davidovich Fokina winning four and Hurkacz two.
- Their 2022 Wimbledon meeting went to five sets, decided 7-6(8) in the final set.
