Juan Manuel Cerundolo #52Argentina00 – 2Alejandro Davidovich Fokina #29Spain2

Both players face the same venue, so the conditions shape how the match is likely to play rather than favouring one side. At roughly 500 m the ball carries a little more and serve has been strong through the opening days, while forecast highs of 26-29C with humidity in the low 80s add a physical load. Rain is forecast on most days and none of the three match courts has a retractable roof, so interruptions and a bunched schedule are live risks, which matters more for a player taking his first match in ten weeks. The heat, humidity and rain figures are forecasts rather than measurements, so any single session can differ.

Davidovich Fokina, the world No. 29, has had the better of this specific matchup in both completed meetings.

Both previous meetings went the Spaniard's way in straight sets, and the most recent one, on grass this June, still needed a tiebreak to close out the third. That record gives him a familiar starting point against a left-hander he has handled twice, although neither match was played on the hard courts of this event, and neither says much about how he returns from a long layoff.

The result itself carries modest weight: it came against a wild card ranked No. 273, and the hard-court sample behind it is thin, so it says little about handling a top-30 opponent. What it does establish is that he has already found the court, the timing and the conditions at this venue, and the straight-sets score kept his workload light. He has also won in China before, taking a Challenger title there in 2025, and a normal day between rounds leaves him a standard recovery window before the round of 16.
