A nine-place ranking gap meets a workload gap running the other way: Berrettini is playing his second match in a month, Vallejo his fourth in five days.

Berrettini is still the likelier match winner, but 1.65 on him asks more than his recent form justifies. Vallejo to win the first set at 2.2 is the one quoted price worth taking.

Context

Jódar was the fourth seed and the highest-ranked opponent Vallejo has beaten, and the 6-1, 6-3 scoreline came without a dropped set or a long patch of pressure. It shows a current level that holds up against a seeded player rather than a ranking-table artefact. What it does not settle is how Vallejo handles the pace Berrettini generates on serve and forehand, because the Jódar match never tested that specific problem.
- Vallejo beat fourth seed Rafael Jódar 6-1, 6-3 in the Tokyo first round, conceding four games in little over an hour.
- Jódar is ranked 13 and was the fourth seed, making it Vallejo's first career win over a top-15 opponent.

The gap since the US Open made the Tokyo opener Berrettini's first match in a month, and the first set reflected it: he lost it 1-6 before winning the second-set tie-break and the third set. Holding that level across two hours 21 minutes answers the immediate question about whether he could compete over a full match. Against an opponent who has already played three matches in Tokyo, a slow start carries a different cost than it did in the first round.
- Berrettini's previous match before Tokyo was his second-round loss at the US Open on 2 September.
- His Tokyo first-round win over Davidovich Fokina lasted two hours 21 minutes after he lost the opening set 1-6.

Berrettini's route through his four tracked hard-court matches has been recovery rather than control: he trails after the first set, takes the second, and the match has gone to a deciding set every time.
Against an opponent who has won seven of ten first sets on hard courts, conceding the opening set again would put Berrettini in the same chase that produced a 2-1 or 1-2 finish in all four of these matches. He still won two of those four, so the pattern is not decisive by itself, but it hands the early momentum to Vallejo.
- In four hard-court best-of-three matches tracked from 3 August to 1 October 2026, Berrettini lost the first set in all four, averaging 2.75 games won and 6 lost.
- He won all four second sets, averaging 6.75 games to 4.75, with three of those four sets reaching a tiebreak.
- All four matches finished 2-1 or 1-2, with an average of 29.75 games per match.
Three Tokyo matches before the round of 16, including a three-set qualifying win over Faria, is a heavy load for a player in his first ATP 500 main draw. Berrettini, by contrast, had played one match in the previous month, so the two arrive with opposite kinds of fatigue and sharpness. If the match extends, Vallejo's accumulated time on court is the likelier cost; if it stays short, the extra matches are the likelier benefit.
- Vallejo beat Taro Daniel 6-3, 6-2 and Jaime Faria 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 in Tokyo qualifying on 28-29 September.
- The round-of-16 tie is his fourth match at the venue in five days and his first ATP 500 main draw.
