Fifth seed Vallejo is the better player and the likely winner, but he arrives from a 3h42m Davis Cup win and a doubles rubber in Lima, and has lost four of six hard-court matches.

Cui's home wild card keeps the games line live: Cui +3.5 at 2.2, Cui to win at 3.75, Cui to take the first set at 3.2, over 2.5 sets at 2.6 and over 21.5 games at 1.9 all carry an edge; the short Vallejo prices do not.

Context

Vallejo played more than four hours across two days in Lima, a 3h42m singles win in which he saved a match point plus a straight-sets doubles rubber, and then travelled to China. His on-site preparation for Hangzhou is therefore compressed around a long-haul flight, which is the one documented condition that could work against him in an opening round he enters as the higher-ranked player. The win itself is his strongest recent result against a top-35 opponent, but it came on clay and his team still lost the tie, so it reads more as a recovery question than as a hard-court form signal.
- : Vallejo beat Ignacio Buse, No. 35, 5-7 7-5 7-6(3) after 3h42m in Lima
- Buse served for the match and held a match point before Vallejo took the deciding tie-break
- Vallejo and Martín Vergara won the doubles rubber 6-3 7-5, giving him more than four hours of play across two days
- He left the venue for China immediately after the tie, which Peru won in the deciding fifth rubber

Cui's hard-court block includes five three-set losses, so he has been extending matches even when he ends up on the wrong side of them.
Long, close matches have been Cui's pattern on this surface, and six of the 14 included a tie-break. A short, one-sided scoreline against him would run against the record, even though his win-loss mark in the window is only 5-9.
- 14 hard-court matches tracked between 22 May and 10 September 2026, averaging 23.9 total games and 2.36 sets per match
- Scorelines in that sample: five 2-0 wins, four 0-2 losses and five 1-2 losses
- Six of the 14 matches included a tie-break, four of them in the second set
Vallejo can hold a set against a tour-level opponent and then lose the next three heavily in the same match.
This is one result rather than a pattern, but it sits alongside his 2-6 0-6 defeat by Van de Zandschulp as evidence that his hard-court scorelines can turn sharply. Cui's habit of extending matches makes how this one finishes relevant.
- 1 September 2026: lost on hard to Gael Monfils, ranked No. 254, winning nine games to 20 over four sets
- Vallejo won the opening set 6-2, then lost 1-6, 2-6, 0-6, taking three of the last 21 games
- The defeat stands alone among his recent results and should be read as a single match
Cui, 28, needed a wild card into his home ATP 250 and is ranked outside the top 400, while Vallejo arrives as the fifth seed, so the two reach this match by entirely different routes and the ranking gap reflects where each man plays rather than one poor stretch of results. The opening round carries unusual value because the winner's projected quarter-final is against top seed Daniil Medvedev, so one win here feeds directly into the week's central storyline. Cui's record sits almost entirely below tour level, which limits what his ranking says about him on outdoor hard courts, while Vallejo's seeding is the clearest measure of the level difference.
- The Hangzhou main draw places wild card Jie Cui against fifth-seeded Adolfo Daniel Vallejo in the first round
- The ATP 250 runs 23–29 September, with main-draw sessions on 24–27 September at 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. local time
- Vallejo is the fifth seed and the winner's projected quarter-final opponent is top seed Daniil Medvedev
- The event is staged at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre tennis centre
