Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 25 Sep 2026, 03:29 · Europe/Bucharest

Wong's hard-court numbers and a 6-3 6-3 opener make him the likelier man into the quarterfinals, but Vallejo outranks him by 50 places and has just beaten a top-35 opponent in a Davis Cup marathon.

The quote on Wong at 1.5 to win the match asks for more than that record justifies. Vallejo to win at 2.6, Vallejo to win 2-0 at 4.25 and a straight-sets finish from either man at 1.55 are the prices worth taking.

Context

Vallejo overturned a match point against a top-35 opponent, which is the strongest single result on his recent record and shows he can win a long match against a higher-ranked player after losing the first set. That matters to this fixture because his ranking advantage over Wong rests on beating exactly this calibre of opponent, and he produced it under team-tie pressure. The limitation is surface and setting: the match was on clay in a Davis Cup tie in Lima three days before he stepped onto the hard courts in Hangzhou, so it evidences his level and durability more than his form in these conditions.
- Vallejo beat Ignacio Buse 5-7 7-5 7-6(3) in 3 hours and 44 minutes on 19 September in Lima
- Buse led 5-4 with a match point in the deciding set before Vallejo took the tie-break 7-3
- Vallejo and Martín Vergara won the doubles 6-3 7-5 over Buse and Arklon Huertas del Pino
- Peru took the tie 3-2 in the fifth rubber and advanced to the 2027 Qualifiers

Vallejo's last week contains a three-hour 44-minute Davis Cup singles, a doubles rubber, a flight from Lima to China and a two-hour 49-minute opening match, while Wong's completed matches in the same window were shorter straight-set wins. The minutes matter because the two arrive at the round of 16 having spent very different amounts of time on court, and the second round offers no extra recovery day. The caveat is that Vallejo had a day between his opener and this match, and his Davis Cup work came on clay, so the accumulated load is a factor rather than a decisive one.
- Vallejo beat Jie Cui 6-1 6-7(2) 6-4 in 2 hours and 49 minutes to reach the round of 16
- He beat a home wild card in the first round having been the seeded player in the tie
- Wong's first-round win over Zhizhen Zhang was completed in straight sets, 6-3 6-3
- Vallejo played a singles and a doubles match on clay on 19 September before travelling to China

Wong's first serve does the heavy lifting: he lands 53.1% of them and wins 77.3% of the points behind it, which is why he has averaged 10.4 aces a match.
That serve is the main obstacle between Vallejo and a foothold in the match, because free points on the Wong delivery mean few return games to work with. The other side of it is a 4.2 double-fault average, and landing 53.1% of first serves leaves plenty of second serves to attack. Wong holds comfortably if the serve lands; if the double faults cluster, Vallejo gets the openings he needs.
- Over 15 matches tracked, Wong has hit 156 aces (10.4 per match) and 63 double faults (4.2 per match)
- He has won 77.3% of first-serve points (454 of 587) while landing 53.1% of first serves in
- He has won 52.3% of second-serve points (271 of 518) across the same 15-match sample
In that six-match sample, Vallejo's first sets have averaged 8.3 games and his second sets 9.3, with no first-set tie-break.
Vallejo has tended to start well on this surface and then lose ground, which matters in a best-of-three match where the second set often decides the outcome. Wong, a heavy server, is exactly the kind of opponent who can turn a tight second set against him. The sample is only six matches and one retired match was set aside, so this is a pattern to watch rather than a settled habit.
- Across six hard-court matches from 2 August to 24 September, Vallejo is 4-2 in first sets and 2-4 in second sets
- First sets average 8.3 games and second sets 9.3 games in that sample, which contains one second-set tie-break
- One retired match was excluded from the six-match set sample
