Context last updated 28 Sep 2026, 15:49 · Europe/Bucharest

Arthur Fils, newly inside the top 10, must win a Tokyo qualifying final for a main-draw place, and Kamil Majchrzak had the fresher week: a 7-5 6-2 win in a little over an hour, while Fils needed three sets and lost the opener 2-6.

Fils is the stronger player and won their only meeting, so he should come through. There is a little value in Fils at 1.30, Fils 2-1 at 4.00, a deciding set at 2.60 and Majchrzak plus 4.5 games at 1.55; Fils's 1.36 set prices are not worth taking.

Context

Fils enters this fixture as a first-time ATP top-10 player after moving to a career-high No. 9 . The ranking fixes his seeding and points baseline for the rest of the season, but it does not change how he plays a single qualifying match. Its relevance here is contextual: a top-10 player is contesting the qualifying event rather than the main draw, a status that adds attention to a fixture that would otherwise be routine.
- Fils reached a career-high No. 9 .
- He is the first player born in 2004 to reach the ATP top 10.
- He is the 13th French man to enter the top 10.
ConfirmedSources checked 28 Sep 2026, 15:46 · Europe/Bucharest
An entry-procedure problem left Fils out of the Tokyo main draw, which is why a top-10 player is in the qualifying event. The practical effect is two extra matches and no ranking protection in this fixture. The cost is workload and recovery rather than any change to his level, and the cause is administrative rather than competitive.
- Fils was left out of the Tokyo main draw by an entry-procedure problem.
- He entered the qualifying event as its top seed.
- The qualifying rounds were scheduled for 28-29 September 2026.
ConfirmedSources checked 28 Sep 2026, 15:46 · Europe/Bucharest
The winner of this match earns a place in the Tokyo main draw, and the draw is unforgiving: the qualifier can land on the No. 3 or No. 4 seed in the first round. For Fils that means his top-10 ranking offers no protection until he wins here, while for Majchrzak a main-draw place is the immediate reward. The stakes are concrete for both, with entry to the main event on one side and elimination on the other.
- The winner of this qualifying final reaches the Tokyo main draw.
- The qualifier can meet Taylor Fritz or Rafael Jodar in the first round.
- Etcheverry and Van Assche are other possible first-round opponents.
ConfirmedSources checked 28 Sep 2026, 15:46 · Europe/Bucharest
Fils lost the opening set 2-6 and then won the next two 6-1, 6-1, so the eventual scoreline hides a flat start. Going to three sets added roughly an extra set to his workload in the opening round. There is no reported physical problem behind the slow start, so this reads as ordinary early-round variance.
- Fils beat Martin Damm 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 in the first qualifying round .
