Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 27 Sep 2026, 22:36 · Europe/Bucharest

Tokyo qualifying opener: Sonego and Majchrzak both need two wins in two days for a main-draw place.

Sonego's stronger serving and better break-point conversion give him the edge over a higher-ranked Majchrzak who has not won back-to-back matches at his last eight tournaments. Sonego to win at 2.25, to take the first set at 2.1 and to win 2-0 at 3.5 are worthwhile; Under 2.5 sets at 1.5 is not.

Context

The account of Sonego's Chengdu defeat links physical problems to the loss, and he turns around into a qualifying match three days later. If that trouble persists, his capacity to sustain a long three-setter against Majchrzak is the live question in this fixture. No withdrawal, retirement or medical timeout has been announced and he is on Monday's order of play, so the condition is one to track rather than a confirmed limitation.
- Brooksby beat Sonego 5-7 7-5 6-2 in the Chengdu round of 16 .
- The defeat was tied to physical problems as well as the comeback.
- Sonego is scheduled to play Monday in Tokyo qualifying.

Only the winner of Monday's match keeps a route into the main draw, and that route runs through the Fils-Damm winner on 29 September before the main draw opens on 30 September. For two players ranked in the 70s and 80s, an ATP 500 qualifying draw this strong, with the world No. 11 and Stefanos Tsitsipas also in it, means there is no soft path to a main-draw place. The consequence is a compressed two-match bracket rather than a week's build-up; it sets the prize, and neither player carries a playing advantage from it.
- Men's qualifying at the Japan Open runs 28-29 September, with the main draw from 30 September to 6 October.
- Arthur Fils opens qualifying against Martin Damm, with the Sonego-Majchrzak winner next for a main-draw place.
- Sonego and Majchrzak are scheduled on Court 1 at 1pm local on 28 September.

Tokyo was not part of a long-laid plan for Sonego: he sat on the qualifying alternates and entered the field only once the entry list shifted above him. Taking a qualifying route at an ATP 500 is unusual for a former top-25 player and means an extra match if he is to reach the main draw. The practical reading is that this is an entry-route detail rather than evidence about his form or fitness.
- Tokyo qualifying entry list update: out Cilic, in Shimabukuro, with Sonego next in.
- Follow-up update: out Michelsen and Shimabukuro, in Sonego and Damm.
- Shelton and Joao Fonseca withdrew from the Tokyo main draw with injuries.

Majchrzak's final tour appearance before his suspension came in Tokyo, so this is a return to a specific point in his career rather than a routine Asian-swing stop. He is here in qualifying as the sixth seed, which frames the week around rebuilding and not defending. The history explains why the venue matters personally but supplies no playing condition against Sonego.
- Majchrzak's last ATP tournament before his 2022 suspension was in Tokyo.
- He begins Tokyo qualifying on Monday after losing in Hangzhou.
