Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 7 Sep 2026, 03:38 · Europe/Bucharest

Felix Balshaw's superior hard-court form and serve make him the likely winner over Nicolai Budkov Kjaer.

The match should be competitive, with value on over 21.5 total games and over 9.5 total aces. Balshaw's moneyline odds offer little edge, but he is the safer pick.

Context

Balshaw, ranked 252, is a 193cm right-hander with a one-handed backhand. He has won 70% of his last 10 hard-court matches.
Balshaw's current run at Cassis includes wins over Lajal (152) and Muller (138), showing he can beat players ranked near Kjaer's level. Kjaer has lost four of his last five matches, including a 6-3 6-1 defeat to Lajal in his most recent outing. This form gap suggests Balshaw is better prepared for this first-round meeting.
- Balshaw has won his last five matches, all on hard courts at the Cassis Challenger.
- Kjaer has lost four of his last five matches, including a 6-3 6-1 loss to Mark Lajal on September 2.
- Balshaw's last 10 hard-court matches show a 7-3 record, while Kjaer's last 8 hard-court matches show a 3-5 record.
Balshaw's first-serve percentage is only 54.5% on hard courts, but his first-serve points won is 72.8%, indicating a high-risk, high-reward serve.
Balshaw's serve gives him more free points and can put pressure on Kjaer's return game. Kjaer's lower ace count and first-serve points won suggest he will need to work harder to hold serve. However, Balshaw's low first-serve percentage means he may face more second serves, where Kjaer could attack.
- Balshaw's hard-court aces per match: 7.0 (63 aces in 9 matches).
- Kjaer's hard-court aces per match: 3.6 (29 aces in 8 matches).
- Balshaw's hard-court first-serve points won: 72.8%; Kjaer's: 63.7%.
Balshaw, 24, is the away player and arrives at Cassis after winning his first Challenger title in Manacor on 6 September.
That five-match title run ended two days before this first-round match, leaving a shortened reset and travel window. The quick turnaround is a workload consideration, but his current form and hard-court edge still support the qualitative outlook favoring Balshaw.
- His five-match Manacor run from 1-6 September ended with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 final win over Inaki Montes De La Torre.
- Stored recent sample: 5 wins from 5 tracked matches.

Kjaer, ranked 149, has struggled against players near his own ranking, losing to Mark Lajal (152) and Jesper De Jong (100) in straight sets.
Kjaer's recent losses to players ranked around 100-150 suggest he is not performing at his ranking level. Balshaw's wins over similar-ranked opponents indicate he is in better form. This pattern could make Balshaw the more confident player in this matchup.
- Kjaer's last five losses: to Lajal (152), O'Connell (106), De Jong (100), Jacquet (108), Shimabukuro (88).
- Balshaw's last five wins include Lajal (152), Muller (138), and Harris (161).
