Context last updated 18 Oct 2026, 04:21 · Europe/Bucharest

Bellucci is the sharper hard-court player, but he arrives in Almaty less than a day after a Challenger final in China.

Etcheverry's ranking says this should be closer; his form says otherwise. Bellucci is the likelier winner. Four quotes hold up under that record: 1.9 to win the match, 1.9 for the first set, 1.85 for the second and 2.9 for a 2-0 win. The 1.9 on Etcheverry does not, with four straight defeats behind him.

Context

The distances involved make this a recovery problem rather than a normal tournament change: roughly 3,500 km with no direct flight, 10-12 hours in the air before transfers, and a three-hour clock change, all between a Sunday final and a Monday first round. Bellucci was still entered in Almaty qualifying midweek and only moved into the main draw, so he had no chance to arrive early or adjust from outdoor hard courts in China to Almaty's indoor hard court. Etcheverry's side of the ledger is the opposite, with no competitive tennis since 10 October. The counterpoint is that Bellucci's Jinan week has been light: four wins, all in straight sets, with a single set reaching a tiebreak, so cumulative court time is not the issue.
- The Jinan final is scheduled not before 10:00 Spanish peninsular time (08:00 UTC) on Sunday 18 October.
- The Almaty first-round draw pairs Etcheverry with Bellucci, with the fixture set for 12:00 local time on Monday 19 October.
- Jinan and Almaty are roughly 3,500 km apart with no direct flight: about 10-12 hours of flying plus transfers, and a three-hour time difference.
- Bellucci was listed in Almaty qualifying in midweek and only appeared in the main draw when it was made .

The shape of the Shanghai defeat is the part that carries into this fixture: two hours 58 minutes, thirteen break points to three converted, and a deciding set lost after the qualifier broke twice late. That is a conversion problem in a match Etcheverry had the chances to close, and it sits inside a run of four straight defeats that ended his tour-level season on hard courts without a win. It also frames the preparation contrast, because he has had nine days since Shanghai to travel and practise in Almaty while Bellucci has had none. The limitation is that this describes level rather than health: the four opponents were ranked between 35 and 126, and nothing in the reporting indicates an active physical problem.
- Svrcina beat Etcheverry 6-3 3-6 7-5 in Shanghai, converting 4 of 9 break points against Etcheverry's 3 of 13.
- The Shanghai defeat was a fourth consecutive loss, after Alex Michelsen, Kyrian Jacquet and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
- Etcheverry has not won a completed match since beating Mariano Navone at the US Open on 4 September.

Bellucci lost the opening set but conceded only five games across the next two.
Bellucci has come from behind against this opponent before, so a slow start in Almaty need not be decisive over three sets. The evidence is a single match from May 2026, and it says little about how either man is playing now.
- The only previous meeting, on 9 May 2026, finished 5-7 6-2 6-3 in Bellucci's favour.
- It is the only head-to-head entry in the record.
His matches in that stretch averaged 21.3 games.
Bellucci has been finishing these matches quickly, with ten 2-0 wins in 14 and an average of 21.3 games. Etcheverry's sample includes four 0-2 defeats in six, so both records point to short matches rather than extended ones.
- Bellucci's 14-match hard best-of-three sample from 24 September to 17 October 2026 contains ten 2-0 wins, one 2-1 win, two 1-2 defeats and one 0-2 defeat.
- His average match in that sample lasted 21.3 games across 2.21 sets.
