James McCabe #259Australia22 – 1Elias Ymer #192Sweden1

The September visit is the only recent block of matches Ymer has played on these courts, and it is the last time he won consecutive main-draw matches, so it is the best evidence of his level in these conditions. Both wins were tight against low-ranked opposition, 5-7 7-5 6-3 over Pankin and 7-6(6) 6-4 over Castelnuovo, which points to venue comfort rather than dominance. Sharipov then beat him in straight sets in the quarter-final, which caps how much weight the run carries. McCabe has no comparable record at this event.

McCabe sits at No. 259, well below the No. 164 career high he set in July 2025, and this China swing has produced one completed win, which came through an opponent's retirement. That matters for a first round because he steps into the main draw with almost no recent winning match play to draw on, and his most recent completed victories elsewhere date from mid-July. The counterpoint is opposition quality: Matsuoka (No. 247) and Cina (No. 147) were ranked level with or above him, so neither loss is an upset, and qualifying matches are a thin gauge of main-draw level.

Ymer's recent results are almost entirely defeats, and his single win in that stretch came through an opponent's retirement, so his No. 192 ranking rests on older results rather than current match wins. The Bellucci sequence is the informative part: he took a top-100 opponent to a deciding tiebreak in a near three-hour match, then lost 6-2 6-1 to the same player eight days later, which suggests the level is present but the week-to-week output is not. Set against that, he has played continuously on Chinese hard courts through September and October, so the sample is current rather than stale, and McCabe's own results in the same period are no stronger.

Six completed matches from 25 July to 12 October have all gone against McCabe, and the Zamora result stands out because that opponent was ranked more than 500 places lower. Four of the six defeats came against players inside the top 250, so the run is not simply a brutal schedule. It leaves him short of recent winning match play before a first round against the higher-ranked Ymer.
