Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 17 Oct 2026, 22:23 · Europe/Bucharest

Two Spaniards play for a first Masters title, and the ranking (Jodar No. 13) plus the hard-court numbers favour the 20-year-old, who beat Medvedev in straight sets.

Davidovich Fokina has the better week, beating Zverev, Tiafoe and Hurkacz and going 8-1 on hard, and Jodar's four straight opening-set losses keep it close. Jodar is the likelier winner in ordinary terms, but 1.73 implies 57.8% and asks for more than the evidence supports; no quoted price here is worthwhile.

Context

Shanghai is the only Masters 1000 a Spanish man has never won: Nadal lost the finals here in 2009 and 2017, Ferrer in 2011 and Bautista Agut in 2016. Sunday's winner ends that sequence and takes a first title at this level, which makes the occasion larger than either player's previous best result at a Masters event. The history sits on both sides of the net equally, so it is not a playing advantage; what changes is the size of what is being decided, with a 27-year-old in his second final at this level and a 20-year-old in his first.
- Ninth all-Spanish Masters 1000 final since 1990 and the first not played on clay
- The previous eight were Hamburg 1996, 1998, 2001; Monte Carlo 2002, 2010, 2011, 2017; Rome 2010
- Both finalists are chasing a first Masters 1000 title
- First final between two compatriots in Shanghai tournament history

The milestone was earned against a former world No. 1 who won this title in 2019, and it came in straight sets after three-set wins in each of his previous four matches, so the level held rather than the draw opening up. For this fixture it sets a contrast in final experience: Davidovich Fokina has played one Masters final and lost it, in Monte Carlo in 2022, while Jodar has none. That gap is the clearest reason to treat the 20-year-old's week as untested at the last step, however well he has played to get there.
- First player born in 2006 or later to reach an ATP Masters 1000 final
- Youngest finalist in Shanghai tournament history at 20
- Beat 2019 Shanghai champion Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 6-4, saving four of five break points in the first set

The 2022 Monte Carlo final is the only previous occasion he has played for a title at this level, and arriving at a second one with two tour titles from this season behind him is a different position from four years ago. He also got through the semifinal after dropping the first set, so the week already includes a win over a higher-ranked opponent in a match that went the distance. Zverev's own assessment was that he did not return well, which tempers how much that win says about Davidovich Fokina's current level. The two 2026 titles came at 250 level, so the step up here is real.
- Beat top seed Alexander Zverev 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinal after losing the first set
- Second Masters 1000 final; his first, the 2022 Monte Carlo final, ended in defeat
- Both career ATP titles, Mallorca and Chengdu, won in 2026
ConfirmedSources checked 17 Oct 2026, 22:21 · Europe/BucharestPerfect Tenniswww.perfect-tennis.com · 17 Oct 2026
Five matches have cost Jodar 14 sets, and the semifinal was his first straight-sets win of the week, which says his level held late in matches rather than fading. The comparison that matters here is recovery: Davidovich Fokina's quarterfinal ended after five games when Arthur Gea retired at 4-1, while Jodar had already played three three-setters by that stage. Jodar's short semifinal narrows that gap at the last step, and both had a day between semifinal and final, so it should not be read as a large recovery difference.
- Four consecutive three-set wins after losing the opening set
- Straight-sets semifinal in 1h44 with a 22-14 winners advantage
- Run included wins over Lehecka (No. 16) and Ruud (No. 24)
