A place in the Almaty main draw is on the line when Daniel, ranked 177, meets the higher-rated Basilashvili, whose recent mid-match retirements make his fitness the wildcard.

Basilashvili's hard-court form makes him the likelier winner, but the 1.45 price on him does not appeal. The two prices with something to offer are Daniel at 2.75 and a straight-sets finish, under 2.5 total sets, at 1.45.

Context

Basilashvili stopped mid-match in Shanghai, his second retirement inside three weeks after he also retired against Naoya Honda in September, and it followed a two-hour-43-minute qualifying win over Liam Draxl that left little recovery time. His physical reliability is the central uncertainty in a match he must win to keep his Almaty campaign alive, because a repeat would end it without a completed contest. He did complete that Shanghai qualifying run and is listed in the Almaty qualifying draw, so the retirement record is a concrete risk rather than evidence he cannot start.
- Mannarino advanced when Basilashvili retired at 6-3, 2-2 in the Shanghai first round.
- The retirement followed a two-hour-43-minute qualifying win over Liam Draxl in which three match points were saved.
- It was a second mid-match retirement inside three weeks, after he also retired against Naoya Honda in September.

Chengdu is the clearest evidence of Basilashvili's current level: three straight hard-court wins over ranked tour opponents in one week after he had to qualify, including Kecmanovic, van de Zandschulp and Brooksby. It explains why a player ranked No. 124 can play above his ranking in a qualifying draw and why he starts this fixture as the higher-rated side despite arriving off a retirement. The caveat is that he has not reproduced that level since, going through Shanghai qualifying without a main-draw win.
- Basilashvili won three consecutive main-draw hard-court matches in Chengdu after coming through qualifying.
- The run included wins over Miomir Kecmanovic, Botic van de Zandschulp and Jenson Brooksby.
- Alejandro Davidovich Fokina beat him 6-4, 4-6, 3-6 in the semifinals.

Framing the fixture as a qualifying first round sets the stakes: neither player holds a main-draw place, so the winner advances toward the tournament proper while the loser's Almaty week ends immediately. It also captures how far both veterans have slipped from their peak rankings of No. 58 and No. 16, with Daniel at No. 177 and Basilashvili at No. 124. The published schedule is provisional because only the first match on each court is fixed.
- The Almaty Open qualifying draw places Daniel against Basilashvili in the first round.
- The order of play lists the match second on Court 1, scheduled around 13:00 local time.
- Both players enter through qualifying rather than the main draw.

Daniel reached the Hangzhou main draw in late September but has since lost his opening qualifying match in both Tokyo and Shanghai, so he arrives in Almaty without a main-draw win since 24 September. That gives the fixture a form edge against him in a match where the two rankings sit close, No. 177 against No. 124. The limitation is that both defeats came at qualifying level, so they describe a low recent floor rather than a sustained decline.
- Daniel's last main-draw wins came in Hangzhou in late September.
- He then lost his Tokyo qualifying opener to Adolfo Daniel Vallejo.
- In Shanghai he won the first set 6-2 but lost his qualifying opener to Shintaro Mochizuki.
