Pre-match view

Context last updated 14 Oct 2026, 15:22 · Europe/Bucharest

Kartal arrives at No. 170 having just beaten ninth seed Belinda Bencic 6-0, 7-5, and off a lighter day than Paolini, who saved eight break points and also played doubles on 14 October.

Paolini remains the likelier winner, with straight sets the more common finish, but none of the reviewed prices — Paolini at 1.8, under 2.5 sets at 1.5, over 21.5 games at 1.73 — is worth taking.

Context

Bencic is the ninth seed and ranked No. 12, so this is the strongest opponent Kartal has beaten in 2026 and the result sits immediately before the Paolini match. It matters because a player ranked No. 170 beating a top-12 seed in straight sets is the main reason this is not a routine seed-versus-outsider fixture. The counterpoint is the shape of the win: Bencic won only five games and her opening set was reported in Swiss coverage as catastrophic, so the margin is wider than the contest itself.
- Bencic, the ninth seed, was beaten 6-0 7-5 in 1 hour 34 minutes
- Kartal's best win of the season and first top-20 win since March
- First time Kartal has reached the last 16 at the Wuhan Open

The layoff removed most of Kartal's counting results, which is the main reason a player with recent wins over Kalinina and Bencic sits at No. 170 rather than near her previous level. The rise to roughly No. 130 in the live rankings reflects that gap between ranking and current form. The limitation is that this is the third event of the comeback, so an extended run is still untested and a six-month back problem is a physical factor that can recur.
- Third tournament since a six-month absence with a back injury
- Third round at back-to-back WTA 1000 events
- No. 170 at entry, around No. 130 in the live rankings

This is Paolini's route into the Kartal match and it was more demanding than the straight-set score suggests, since she was two breaks down against an opponent who had just beaten Sabalenka. Winning from there is evidence that Paolini is finding her level on this court after a difficult season. The limitation is that the opening set turned on a tie-break, so the match was narrow before the second set opened up.
- Trailed 2-5 in the first set before winning it in a tie-break
- Saved eight break points in the match
- Bartunkova had beaten Sabalenka the previous week
- Third appearance in the Wuhan round of 16

The 2025 semifinal is a main reason Paolini is still inside the top 35 after a season of early exits, and those points are at stake at this event. That frames the round-of-16 match as a points-defence occasion rather than a routine seed fixture. The limitation is that the ranking slide is the season-long pattern, so one win over a resurgent Bartunkova does not by itself reverse it.
- Ranking fell from No. 7 to No. 33 across 2026
- Wuhan semifinalist in 2025
- Second top-30 win of the 2026 season
