Context last updated 13 Oct 2026, 03:16 · Europe/Bucharest

Bencic, the world No. 12, has the ranking and hard-court record to see off No.

170 Kartal in the Wuhan second round, though Kartal has already won here and is building back from a six-month layoff. Bencic to win the match at 1.44 is the one quoted price that justifies support; the 1.45 on her to take the first set, and Kartal's 2.5 first-set and 2.75 match prices, do not.

Context

Bencic starts the tournament in the second round, while Kartal already has a completed first-round win behind her. That asymmetry gives Bencic fresher legs but leaves her without a competitive match on the Wuhan courts before this one. Noskova's withdrawal also changed the shape of the draw, moving Bencic away from the section where she had been listed as a projected third-round opponent for Iga Swiatek. The main draw began on 12 October, so the reshuffle took effect before either player had hit a ball in Wuhan.
- Linda Noskova withdrew from the Wuhan Open with a left calf injury before the first order of play
- Bencic moved into the vacated seed position and received a first-round bye
- Noskova had just qualified for her first WTA Finals

Kartal's ranking sits at No. 170, well below what her recent wins on hard courts suggest, because the injury layoff removed most of her 2026 season. A back stress fracture is a load-related injury, so playing consecutive weeks is the relevant durability question rather than any single result. She has completed all five matches since returning without retiring, and she now faces a seeded opponent coming off a bye.
- Kartal missed about six months with a stress fracture in her back
- She returned to competition in September after the layoff
- She has won three of five singles matches since returning

A straight-sets win over the world No. 48 is evidence of a level above Kartal's No. 170 ranking, and it follows her win over No. 39 Xinyu Wang in Beijing the week before. The two-break recovery matters because she closed out a set that was going against her, the kind of set a favourite like Bencic is expected to take. It also means Kartal has a completed match on these courts before Bencic has played one.
- Kartal beat Anhelina Kalinina 7-5 6-3 in the first round in Wuhan
- She recovered from two breaks down during the win
- Kalinina is ranked No. 48, while Kartal is No. 170

Kartal's No. 170 ranking sits well below the level her best tracked results suggest.
This is the strongest single result in Kartal's recent record and shows a level above her ranking, which matters against a seed like Bencic. It is still one match from March, seven months before this fixture, and does not by itself predict a repeat. It supports taking her seriously as a threat without overstating the sample.
- 9 March 2026: Kartal beat Madison Keys (No. 20) 2-6 6-2 6-3 on hard court
- Kartal lost the opening set before winning the second and third
- Keys was ranked No. 20 at the time of the match
