Context last updated 9 Oct 2026, 03:27 · Europe/Bucharest

Paul's ranking and 2-0 head-to-head record point to him as the likely winner, but both of those meetings went three sets and he has played one match since the US Open, while Vallejo has won five of six and just took his Shanghai opener in 61 minutes.

Two prices hold up: Vallejo to win at 2.75 and the match to go past 23.5 games at 2.2. Paul at 1.45 and under 23.5 games at 1.6 do not.

Context

Vallejo arrived in Shanghai with no prior main-draw history at the event, and his 61-minute first-round win installed him as the first Paraguayan to record a Shanghai main-draw victory. That clean, short opener preserves his physical condition while confirming he can handle the venue's hard-court conditions. The limitation is that the result came against a No. 105-ranked opponent rather than a seeded one, so it is a genuine stage milestone but not yet evidence of a breakthrough against top-20 opposition.
- He beat Valentin Royer 6-3, 6-1 in his Shanghai main-draw debut in just over one hour.
- The result made him the first Paraguayan to win a match at the Shanghai Masters 1000.
- He was one of five South American players to reach the second round in Shanghai.
ConfirmedSources checked 9 Oct 2026, 03:24 · Europe/Bucharest
The ranking gap in this match doubles as a near-term milestone: Vallejo is two spots below the top 50, and beating Paul would place him inside it for the first time. That would also make him only the third Paraguayan to reach the mark. He is protecting a large points total in the next ranking update, so the practical value of a win here compounds beyond the tournament itself; the outcome is contingent on the result and remains unresolved.
- Vallejo is ranked No. 52, two places below the top 50.
- One more Shanghai win would place him inside the top 50 for the first time.
- It would make him the third Paraguayan to reach the top 50.
- He is defending a substantial block of ranking points in the coming ranking update.

Paul missed Laver Cup in mid-September to manage an elbow problem picked up at the US Open, and he entered Shanghai with a single completed match in the preceding three weeks, a straight-sets loss in Beijing. His first-round bye means he begins this event without any competitive match on the Shanghai courts. The withdrawal was more than three weeks ago and he has since competed without any reported recurrence, so this is best read as a limited recent workload rather than an active injury concern.
- Paul withdrew from Laver Cup as he recovered from an elbow injury sustained at the US Open.
- Francisco Cerundolo replaced him on the Team World roster.
- Paul's next recorded match was a Beijing first-round loss to Alejandro Tabilo on September 30, 2026.
ConfirmedSources checked 9 Oct 2026, 03:24 · Europe/Bucharest
Paul's sample covers eight completed hard-court best-of-three matches between 28 July and 30 September 2026, with no retirements excluded.
His sets in this window have gone deep, with four tiebreak matches, and he has started slowly at 3-5 in opening sets. That points to extended sets rather than a quick straight-sets finish, which is where Vallejo's ability to hold serve in longer sets becomes relevant.
- Eight completed hard-court best-of-three matches, 28 July to 30 September 2026; no retirements excluded.
- Average 25 total games per match, with first sets averaging 9.4 games and second sets 10.75.
- Four of the eight matches included a tiebreak.
- Paul won three of eight first sets and three of eight second sets.
