Alex Bolt #158Australia22 – 0Dane Sweeny #124Australia0

Sweeny beat No. 13 seed Lorenzo Musetti over four sets at the 2026 US Open, reaching the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time and showing a hard-court level well above the No. 123 ranking he carried into New York. That is the central reference point for this quarterfinal, because Sweeny is the higher-ranked player here at No. 110 and this surface rewards the ball-striking that carried him past a top-20 opponent. The result needs context: Musetti was struggling physically through much of the match, and Sweeny's first-round win came when Corentin Moutet retired, so the run was not built entirely on clean, fully-fit opposition.

Sweeny, the second seed, is the higher-ranked player and has been the stronger starter on hard courts in this window.

Sweeny's hard-court set sample splits sharply: 6 of 9 first sets won at 5.67 games to 4.56, but only 2 of 9 second sets at 3.22 games to 5.00. In a best-of-three quarterfinal that leaves him exposed if the opening set slips away, because his second sets have been the weaker ones. The sample covers nine completed hard-court matches between 2026-07-21 and 2026-10-01 and excludes two retired matches, so it is a small base rather than a settled pattern.

Sweeny has spoken publicly about almost walking away from tennis two years ago and about the change in approach that preceded his 2026 breakthrough, a run that produced a career-high ranking and a reported $402,000 payday. It matters here because it frames a 25-year-old whose ranking and results are still moving upward quickly rather than a player settled at his current standing. The counterweight is his most recent tour-level match, a 7-6(6) 6-2 first-round loss to qualifier Taro Daniel in Hangzhou, which shows the level has not been continuous.

Sweeny is the second seed in Jingshan and, at No. 110, the higher-ranked player in this tie. He dropped a single set across his first two matches, to compatriot Omar Jasika, before beating Petr Bar Biryukov 6-4 6-1 in the round of 16, and the Biryukov win is the sturdier of the two because the Russian had reached the Guangzhou Challenger semifinals the previous week. The straight-set win in the round of 16 also leaves Sweeny with less court time than Bolt, who needed three sets in the same round one day earlier.
