Max Alcala Gurri #138Spain22 – 0Andres Andrade #203Ecuador0

The fixture is Andrade's first clay match in the recorded window, while Alcala Gurri has not played on anything but clay since late August, so the adjustment to slower conditions sits entirely on one side of the net. Andrade's hard-court results, including a straight-sets run to the Columbus semifinal, do not show how his serving patterns and depth transfer to clay. The counterpoint is that a 15-match window is short: it says nothing about Andrade's earlier clay form, and both players list clay as their preferred surface.

The ranking line is the sum of that: four titles in eight months took him from outside the top 380 to No. 138, so his standing reflects a sustained season rather than a single draw. For this fixture it identifies him as the higher-ranked player on the surface he has played exclusively for two months, and the Plovdiv week showed he can close out a title without losing a set. The gap in the record is that all four titles came at Challenger 50 and 75 level, so the jump reflects volume of wins at that tier rather than results above it.

Six days is close enough for this to be the most recent read on Alcala Gurri's level, and it is a loss to a qualifier ranked more than 230 places below him on the same surface. The wider week was not a collapse: he also won a doubles match in Maia and had taken 11 of his previous 15 matches, most of them comfortably. It is a one-match sample against an opponent in the best form of his career, so it tempers rather than overturns the case for him as the higher-ranked player here.
