Context last updated 13 Oct 2026, 15:23 · Europe/Bucharest

Jodar, the No. 13 setting a debut-season record, meets a Van de Zandschulp who has just beaten the eighth seed.

Jodar is the likelier winner, but the gap is narrow and his two Shanghai wins both took three sets after losing the opener. The 1.45 on Jodar asks too much; the prices that hold up are Van de Zandschulp with a 2.5-game start at 2.0 and Van de Zandschulp to win at 2.75. Under 2.5 sets at 1.55 asks too much as well.

Context

Van de Zandschulp beat an eighth-seeded top-10 opponent in straight sets to reach the fourth round, the best result of his recent hard-court run. That matters because Jódar arrives as the higher-ranked player and the favourite, and Van de Zandschulp has now shown he can take out a higher-ranked opponent this week. The counterpoint is that Jódar is the more consistent performer across the season, so one upset does not by itself reverse the ranking gap.
- Van de Zandschulp beat Arthur Fils 7-5 6-4 in the Shanghai third round
- Fils was the eighth seed and ranked No. 10
- The win put Van de Zandschulp into the Shanghai round of 16

Jódar lost the first set in both of his Shanghai rounds and still advanced, so slow starts are the clearest risk in a first meeting with an opponent who won his last two matches in straight sets. His own assessment that he stayed mentally strong points to in-match recovery rather than fitness. The counterpoint is that Van de Zandschulp also needed three sets in his opening match here, so resilience after dropping a set is not unique to Jódar.
- Jódar beat Jiří Lehečka 4-6 7-6(2) 6-4 in the Shanghai third round
- He lost the opening set before winning in three
- Jódar said he had stayed mentally strong to win a difficult match

The milestone explains why a 19-year-old is ranked in the top 15 and favoured here: five straight Masters 1000 fourth rounds is a level of consistency rather than a one-week spike. It also frames the occasion as a test of whether a record-setting debut season converts into a first Shanghai quarter-final. The counterpoint is that the record is cumulative across the season and says nothing about his level on this court, where both of his wins were three-set comebacks.
- Jódar's Shanghai third-round win was his 40th of the season
- It set a record for a debut professional season
- He reached a fifth straight Masters 1000 fourth round
- The previous best debut-season figure was 26 wins
ConfirmedSources checked 13 Oct 2026, 15:20 · Europe/Bucharest
The guarantee attaches concrete stakes to Van de Zandschulp's week: a return to the top 40 for the first time in months is already secured. It matters because it frames the fourth round as a step in a 2026 ranking recovery rather than a decline, which changes how his season is read. The ranking gain came from reaching the round rather than from this match, so the fixture does not itself decide the milestone.
- Reaching the Shanghai fourth round guarantees Van de Zandschulp a ranking of at least No. 38
- It returns him to the top 40 for the first time in several months
