Pre-match view

Context last updated 12 Oct 2026, 03:11 · Europe/Bucharest

Fils is the higher-ranked, stronger hard-court player, but van de Zandschulp's second-set record makes this awkward.

Fils should win, probably in straight sets. Fils to win the match at 1.22 offers nothing, and 1.29 for the first set, 1.6 for a 2-0 win and 1.6 for Under 22.5 games are too short. Four longer prices offer something: Van de Zandschulp to win at 4.25, +2.5 games at 2.9, the second set at 3.3, and Over 2.5 sets at 2.6.

Context

Fils is seventh in the live Race to Turin and is chasing a first ATP Finals qualification, so each round in Shanghai directly affects a season-long objective. He is also second in the Masters 1000 bonus pool, where the top-30 payout is the largest single cheque of his year. Because Jannik Sinner is out for the rest of 2026, ninth place is likely enough, which leaves Fils close to the cut line rather than safely inside it. A third-round exit would hand ground back to the players immediately behind him.
- Fils is seventh in the live Race to Turin going into the third round.
- He is second in the Masters 1000 bonus-pool standings and has played every mandatory Masters event in 2026.
- Sinner is out for the remainder of 2026, making the ninth Race place likely sufficient for ATP Finals qualification.

The Kotov win was Fils's 21st Masters 1000 victory of 2026 and his seventh in a row, a stretch that includes the Cincinnati title and semi-finals in Miami and Madrid. That body of work is the strongest hard-court evidence behind him, and it is why the Shanghai opener read as a continuation rather than a statement. The counterweight is that his most recent defeat came on this same swing, a three-set loss to Valentin Vacherot in Tokyo, so his level has not been uninterrupted.
- Only Jannik Sinner has won more Masters 1000 matches than Fils in 2026.
- Fils's Shanghai opener against Kotov lasted 1:16:57.
- Fils's 2026 Masters 1000 results include the Cincinnati title, Miami and Madrid semi-finals and Indian Wells and Montreal quarter-finals.

Ivanisevic has been in Fils's corner through the Asian swing, a mid-season addition at the point where the indoor and Asian hard-court events decide the season. Fils has publicly tied his Tokyo form to the partnership, describing warm-ups with Ivanisevic in unusually absolute terms after beating Frances Tiafoe. The arrangement is recent enough that on-court patterns are still forming, which makes it a live variable in how his game is being managed through Shanghai rather than a settled influence.
- Ivanisevic was with Fils in Tokyo in late September and again in Shanghai.
- After beating Frances Tiafoe in Tokyo, Fils said he never loses when he warms up with Ivanisevic.
- Fils discussed Ivanisevic's playing career during the Shanghai week.

This is van de Zandschulp's deepest run in four Shanghai appearances, and the win over Alex Michelsen came in straight sets against a player ranked inside the top 40. The result matters less as a ranking gain than as evidence that his US Open form is carrying into the Asian hard-court swing, where he has now won two matches. His first round, though, needed three sets against Daniel Merida Aguilar, so the level across the week has not been uniform.
- The win over Alex Michelsen took van de Zandschulp into the Shanghai third round for the first time in four appearances.
- His previous best Shanghai result was the second round.
- He needed three sets to beat Daniel Merida Aguilar in the first round.
