Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 7 Oct 2026, 22:13 · Europe/Bucharest

Two players eight ranking places apart meet in the Villena second round, and the question is whether Rehberg's habit of losing the first set finally costs him.

Rehberg is the likelier winner — 10 of his last 14 tracked matches and three three-set wins here — but the 1.7 price asks for about a 59% chance from a player who has started slowly in every round. Barton at 2.05 is no bargain either. Neither reviewed match-winner price is worth taking.

Context

Samuel was the highest-ranked opponent either man has faced in Villena, and Barton closed him out in straight sets after a tight opening tiebreak, so the result is current hard-court evidence rather than a restatement of the ranking gap. Barton's 2026 match volume before this week had come almost entirely on clay, which makes a hard-court win over a top-100 opponent the clearest available signal of his level in this event. The margin was narrower than the straight-sets score suggests, and the same player lost his qualifying final to a No. 298 opponent two days earlier.
- Barton defeated Toby Samuel 7-6 6-3 in the Villena first round .
- Samuel is ranked No. 100, higher than any opponent either player has beaten in Villena this week.

Rehberg started the week in qualifying and needed three sets in all three matches to reach this round, so the sequence is a same-week, same-surface sample rather than a general form claim. It matters because this fixture sets him against a player ranked eight places below him, and outdoor hard courts are the thinnest part of his recent record. Two of the three opponents in that run were ranked outside the top 280, and the pattern of losing first sets rests on only those three matches.
- Rehberg beat Edas Butvilas 1-6 6-4 7-5 after coming through the qualifying draw.
- He lost the opening set in all three of his Villena matches and won each in three sets.
- The three wins extend his current winning streak to eight matches.
ConfirmedSources checked 7 Oct 2026, 22:11 · Europe/Bucharest
Barton's early-set scoring is the steadiest part of his week: 19 games won to 12 lost in first sets across three matches, one of them settled by a tiebreak. It matters here because Rehberg has dropped the opening set in every round at Villena, so the first set is where Barton can put scoreboard pressure on him. The sample is only three matches, and a fast start alone has not settled matches for Barton this week.
- Barton won the opening set in all three of his hard-court matches at Villena between 4 and 7 October 2026 (3 matches tracked).
- He averaged 6.33 games won to 4.0 games lost in those first sets.
- One of the three first sets went to a tiebreak.
The single previous meeting was played indoors in Helsinki in 2024, which makes it a stylistic reference point rather than evidence about current form. It is also on the opposite surface from this fixture, an outdoor hard court in Spain, and it predates the 2026 season in which both players set their current rankings. One qualifying-round match is a thin basis for expecting the second meeting to follow the same shape.
- Rehberg won the single previous meeting 6-4 6-2.
- The match was played in the second round of qualifying at the 2024 Helsinki indoor hard event.
