Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 6 Oct 2026, 03:13 · Europe/Bucharest

The tension is whether Barton's fast starts hold against a favourite who has won 11 of his last 12 second sets on hard.

Samuel, ranked 100 to Barton's 288, should win, most likely in straight sets. At the quoted odds, Samuel's prices — 1.18 to win the match, 1.65 to win 2-0 — give little back, while Barton's 3.3 for the first set and 4.25 for the match are the two worth a look.

Context

Samuel is the higher-ranked player, and the second set has been his most productive phase on hard courts.
Across 12 completed hard-court matches from 21 July to 1 October 2026, Samuel's second sets finished 11-1 at an average of 6-2.7, while his first sets were only 7-5. That gap makes the opening set the least predictable part of his day, which matters against an opponent who has taken the first set in both of his hard-court matches this month.
- Twelve completed hard-court matches tracked, 21 July to 1 October 2026; one retired match excluded.
- Set 2: 11 wins, 1 loss, averaging 6 games won to 2.7 lost.
- Set 1: 7 wins, 5 losses, with two tiebreaks.
- Seven of the 12 matches finished 2-0; average match length 2.33 sets.
Barton is the lower-ranked player, and his recent hard-court starts are the one clear positive in a very small sample.
The set evidence covers two completed matches — a straight-sets win and a three-set loss — with set 1 won twice and set 2 split. An average of 23.5 games across those two matches shows neither finished quickly, but two matches is too small a base to treat the fast starts as a settled pattern.
- Two completed hard-court matches tracked, 4 October to 5 October 2026; no retirements.
- Set 1: 2 wins, 0 losses; set 2: 1 win, 1 loss.
- Average 23.5 total games and 2.5 sets per match.
- Scorelines: one 2-0 win and one 1-2 loss.
Samuel carries the stronger record into this first round, but his most recent outing went the distance and ended in a loss.
Kym took the first and third sets 6-2, with Samuel winning the second 6-4, and Samuel finished with 10 games to Kym's 16. It is the freshest result in his record before this match, and it followed a straight-sets win two days earlier, so it stands as a single setback rather than a run of poor form.
- 1 October 2026: lost 1-2 to Jerome Kym (249) on hard, 10 games won to 16 lost.
- Sets: 2-6, 6-4, 2-6.
- Completed match, not a retirement.
