Context last updated 13 Oct 2026, 16:01 · Europe/Bucharest

Two players reach the Shanghai fourth round without dropping a set: Paul beat defending champion Vacherot, while Bergs knocked out world No.

3 Alcaraz. Paul's 6-1, 6-2 win in their only meeting makes him the likelier winner, but Bergs at 2.75 is the one reviewed price that offers something. Paul at 1.45 and the straight-sets bet at 1.50 both ask for more than the evidence justifies.

Context

Bergs reaches this fourth-round match off the strongest result of his career, having beaten the world No. 3 without dropping a set while winning 79% of his first-serve points. That serve-first level gives him a real path in this fixture, because the one time these two met the points were short and one-sided in Paul's favour. The counterpoint is that Bergs has never taken a set from Paul, so this is one outstanding day set against a single lopsided prior meeting.
- Bergs defeated Alcaraz 7-5, 7-6(4) in the Shanghai third round .
- It was the biggest win of Bergs's career by opponent ranking; he won 79% of his first-serve points.
- The result ended Alcaraz's seven-match winning streak and assured Alexander Zverev of the 2026 year-end No. 1 ranking.
- Bergs had already beaten Vit Kopriva 6-3, 6-1 and Ignacio Buse 6-0, 6-3 without dropping a set in Shanghai.

Paul removed the 2025 champion in straight sets, breaking the title holder's long unbeaten run at this venue and reaching the last 16 without dropping a set. Beating a defending champion on the tournament's main court is a stronger form signal than the ranking gap alone suggests and shows Paul is handling Shanghai conditions. The caveat is that Vacherot's rapid ranking slide underlines how volatile results at this event have been, so the win carries weight without guaranteeing a repeat.
- Paul defeated 2025 champion Valentin Vacherot 6-4, 6-2 in the Shanghai third round .
- The win ended Vacherot's 10-match winning streak at the event.
- Vacherot is projected to fall from a career-high No. 14 to about No. 32 after the loss.
- Paul has not dropped a set in Shanghai, having beaten Adolfo Daniel Vallejo 6-2, 6-2 in his opener.

The only completed meeting between these players was a 6-1, 6-2 win for Paul in 68 minutes on a hard court in March, so Paul has already shown he can take time away from Bergs and keep points short. It matters here because Bergs's route to this round has been built on serving and first-strike tennis, the area Paul neutralised in Indian Wells. A single match more than seven months ago is a limited guide, particularly with Bergs now playing the best tennis of his career.
- The only recorded meeting between the two came at Indian Wells on 7 March 2026.
- Paul won 6-1, 6-2 in 68 minutes.
- The two had not met again before this Shanghai fourth round.

Zizou Bergs, world No. 39, has reached the Shanghai last 16 without dropping a set.
Bergs has won 77.9% of first-serve points across the same 13 matches, so the serve is a weapon as well as a leak. The 61 double faults are a feature of the whole window, not one bad day. Paul averages 2.6 double faults per match over his own 15 matches, giving away fewer free points if games go long.
- In Bergs's last 15 matches to 12 October 2026, serve data covers 13, in which he averaged 4.7 double faults per match, 61 in total.
- He won 77.9% of first-serve points (445 of 571) in those matches, with 87 aces (6.7 per match).
