Vacherot has not lost in Shanghai in ten matches and served his way past Baez, while Paul arrives off a 76-minute 6-2 6-2 opener.

The numbers lean slightly Vacherot's way in a first meeting. Four quoted prices offer something: Vacherot to win at 2.25, Vacherot with a 3.5-game start at 1.5, Vacherot to take the first set at 2.1 and over 24.5 games at 2.0. The 1.65 on Paul asks more than his case supports.

Context

Vacherot is defending the 1,000 ranking points from his 2025 title, so his position near the top 15 is tied to this run. He opened with 15 aces and more than 80% of first-serve points won against Baez, the serving level that carried him through nine matches last year. He was broken while serving for the match at 5-4 in the second set before winning the tiebreak, a reminder that closing sets against a returner of Paul's quality is a live risk. Baez is ranked outside the top 50, so the win confirms continuity rather than form against top-20 opposition.
- Defending champion; beat Sebastian Baez 6-4 7-6(5) in the second round
- Tenth consecutive Shanghai win including the 2025 qualifying run
- 15 aces and more than 80% of first-serve points won against Baez
- Broken while serving for the match at 5-4 before winning the tiebreak

Winning a Masters 1000 from qualifying at No. 204 and beating his cousin in the final is the defining result of Vacherot's career and the reason Shanghai is his reference tournament. It frames the contrast with Paul, who has nine tour titles but none here. The ranking gap is now small, so the 2025 run itself is weak evidence about a first meeting on a different day. It does explain why Vacherot returns with expectations and points to protect rather than as an unknown qualifier.
- Won the 2025 Shanghai title as a qualifier ranked No. 204
- Beat cousin Arthur Rinderknech 4-6 6-3 6-3 in the final
- Lowest-ranked Masters 1000 champion since the series began in 1990

Three wins over seeded opponents in Tokyo are the strongest current form evidence for Vacherot and show he is not relying only on last year's title. Two of those matches went to a deciding set, and the run added matches and a Tokyo-to-Shanghai trip at the same time that Paul had a first-round bye and one short match. The 6-4 6-2 semifinal loss to Jiri Lehecka is his most recent completed match and the clearest recent measure against a top-20 opponent.
- Tokyo wins over Blockx, Tsitsipas and Fils en route to the semifinal
- Lost the semifinal to Jiri Lehecka 6-4 6-2
- Two of the Tokyo wins required a deciding set

The 6-2 6-2 win over Vallejo is Paul's first completed match since a 6-1 6-2 loss to Alejandro Tabilo in Tokyo, and it shows he did not carry that result into Shanghai. It took only 76 minutes, which limits accumulated work before this third-round match against a busier opponent. Vallejo is ranked outside the top 50, so the scoreline confirms control rather than a test against top-20 opposition, and Paul's level against a defending champion remains the open question.
- Beat Adolfo Daniel Vallejo 6-2 6-2 in 1 hour 16 minutes
- Followed a 6-1 6-2 loss to Alejandro Tabilo in Tokyo
