Context last updated 10 Oct 2026, 21:38 · Europe/Bucharest

Qinwen Zheng, a home wildcard, is chasing a first Chinese title in Beijing against Mirra Andreeva, the No. 5 seed and reigning Roland Garros champion who has dropped one set all week.

Andreeva is the likelier winner, but the 1.5 match price asks more than her week supports, as do her 1.55 second-set and 2.2 straight-sets prices. The one price that holds up is Zheng to win the first set at 2.3.

Context

The winner takes a WTA 1000 title on the Beijing hard court, so the occasion carries ranking and status weight beyond a normal final. Zheng, a 24-year-old wildcard at No. 54, would become the first Chinese player to lift the trophy, a result that would accelerate her climb back after an injury-hit period. Andreeva, 19, would add a second major-level title in the same season as her Roland Garros win. The limitation is that both narratives describe the stakes, not the tennis: neither route nor physical state is settled by the milestone itself.
- Zheng can become the first Chinese China Open singles champion
- Andreeva can become the youngest China Open champion since Agnes Szavay in 2007

Mertens, the No. 13 seed, was a high-quality opponent and the straight-set scoreline shows Zheng closed a semifinal without a deciding set after several earlier three-set wins. It matters because Zheng is playing as a wildcard ranked No. 54, so a title here would restore her standing quickly in front of a home crowd that has carried her through the week. The counterpoint is that Mertens is a counterpuncher rather than the heavier first-strike opponent Zheng meets in Andreeva, so this result does not directly predict the final.
- Zheng beat Mertens 7-5, 6-2 in the semifinal
- She is the first Chinese player to reach the China Open singles final
- Her previous best at the event was the 2024 semifinal

Andreeva arrives as the reigning Roland Garros champion and No. 4 seed, so a first China Open final confirms her hard-court results now match her clay reputation. The semifinal scoreline matters because Bartunkova had removed Sabalenka and Muchova, and Andreeva still finished the match in 74 minutes with little physical cost. It shapes this fixture because she has dropped only one set in Beijing and enters the final comparatively fresh. The counterpoint is that the second week was the first time she faced seeded opposition, so this reflects one strong event rather than a long hard-court record.
- Andreeva beat Bartunkova 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinal
- Andreeva is the reigning Roland Garros champion
- Bartunkova had beaten Sabalenka and Muchova earlier in the event
ConfirmedSources checked 10 Oct 2026, 21:35 · Europe/BucharestAOLwww.aol.com · 10 Oct 2026
The streak matters because it shows Zheng has recovered the level that made her the 2024 Olympic champion while playing on a ranking outside the top 50. Her route has been heavy, with three-set wins and a retirement among the six matches, while Andreeva has spent far less time on court, so recovery into the final is unequal. That asymmetry is the concrete reason this match may be harder for Zheng than the ranking gap implies. The caveat is that all six wins came at home on the same Beijing court, a condition she will not always have.
- Zheng has won six straight matches in Beijing as a wildcard
- She beat seeded Elina Svitolina 6-3, 7-6(6) in the quarterfinals
- Those results followed an injury-hit period before Beijing
