Context last updated 7 Oct 2026, 02:53 · Europe/Bucharest

An all-Spanish round of 16 at Villena, where No.

130 Pedro Martinez meets No. 245 Daniel Rincon on hard court. Martinez is the likely winner, but a near-three-hour first-round comeback and four opening sets dropped in seven hard-court matches leave room for a left-handed opponent. The reviewed match-winner price of 1.85 on Martinez holds up; the same 1.85 on Rincon does not.

Context

Martinez spent close to three hours on court in an evening first-round match, conceding the opening set before winning two tight sets. Rincon's round-of-32 win, by contrast, was a two-set match completed a day earlier. That leaves Martinez with the longer match behind him and the shorter recovery before the round of 16 on 8 October, the kind of workload difference that can shape a best-of-three at this level. The limitation is that one long three-setter is not on its own proof of fatigue, and both men had a rest day before the tie.
- Martinez beat August Holmgren 2-6, 7-6(1), 7-5 in the first round
- The match ran close to three hours and finished after sunset
- Martinez lost the opening set before taking the second and third

The tie is between two Spaniards on the same outdoor hard court, in an event whose draw leans heavily Spanish, so there is no obvious away-crowd effect for either man. The clearest separator is the ranking gap of more than a hundred places, with Martinez at No. 130 and Rincon at No. 245. Both arrive having won their opening match, so ranking rather than current results is the main reference point for the fixture. Ranking alone, though, is a blunt measure for a single best-of-three between compatriots on the same court.
- The match is listed as a round-of-16 tie at Villena on outdoor hard court
- Martinez is ranked No. 130 and Rincon No. 245
- Both players won their opening-round match to reach this round
- The tie is scheduled for 8 October

Rincon's only completed match in Villena so far is a straight-sets win in the round of 32, which kept his court time short ahead of the 8 October tie. Dropping only six games across two sets meant limited time on the tournament's outdoor hard court. The counterweight is the level of the opponent: Alejo Sanchez Quilez is ranked outside the top 350, so the result says little about how Rincon handles a top-150 opponent such as Martinez.
- Rincon beat Alejo Sanchez Quilez 6-2, 6-4 in the round of 32
- The win came in straight sets
- Sanchez Quilez is ranked outside the top 350

The event is a Challenger 100 played on outdoor hard courts at the Juan Carlos Ferrero academy in Villena from 4 to 11 October, with a 32-player draw and 100 ranking points for the champion. That ranking value sets the stakes for a round-of-16 match between two players outside the top 100. The draw is also unusually Spanish, so this pairing sits inside a broad home contingent rather than standing alone. What the setting does not do is separate the two men, since the courts, the round and the points on offer are identical for both.
- The event is played 4-11 October with a 32-player draw
- The champion earns 100 ranking points
- It is the ninth edition of the Villena event
- Matches are played on outdoor hard courts at the Juan Carlos Ferrero academy
