Pre-match view

Context last updated 6 Oct 2026, 04:35 · Europe/Bucharest

Two players in decent Chinese hard-court form meet in the Suzhou first round, and Hontama's steadier serve and better break-point defence make her the slight favourite against the higher-ranked Jones.

At 2.25 Hontama to win is the stronger of the two quoted match prices, and Over 2.5 sets at 2.3 also carries support; Jones at 1.65 and Under 2.5 sets at 1.5 ask for more than the evidence justifies.

Context

Jones played four singles matches in six days in Jingshan, where she was the third seed, and her week ended with a 5-7, 4-6 semifinal defeat . That is the freshest read on her level on Chinese hard courts, and it leaves her a three-day turnaround against an opponent who has not competed since, which is the clearest physical difference between the two players here. The read has a real limit: her three wins came against opponents ranked outside the top 250, and the loss came against a player who had never previously beaten a top-150 opponent.
- Jones was the third seed at the WTA 125 in Jingshan and won three matches before the semifinal.
- She beat Haruka Kaji 6-2, 6-4, Chenting Zhu 6-1, 6-4 and Kyoka Okamura 7-6(4), 7-6(3).
- She lost the semifinal to Alexandra Shubladze 5-7, 4-6 .

Jones's first serve is a genuine weapon; her second serve and double-fault count are where opponents can apply pressure.
The gap between Jones's first and second serve is the widest part of her game in this sample, and 91 double faults in 15 matches hands back a steady supply of points. Hontama has been the more economical server in the same window, so the serve exchanges are unlikely to be one-way traffic. It points to service games that are attacked on both sides rather than held comfortably, which is why the match reads close to even.
- Jones's last 15 matches to 3 October 2026 include 23 aces (1.5 per match) and 91 double faults (6.1 per match).
- In that sample she wins 63.7% of first-serve points (434 of 681) and 40.9% of second-serve points (198 of 484).
- Her first serve has landed in 58.5% of attempts (681 of 1165) across those 15 matches.
Hontama's Beijing week is the most recent evidence of her level, and it shows she can convert a qualifying route into a WTA 1000 main-draw place, including a three-set recovery against Jodie Anna Burrage. The quality she beat is the limit: her qualifying wins came against opponents ranked outside the top 700, and a top-60 player then took her out in straight sets, so the run says more about her competitive rhythm than about her form against better opposition. She comes into this first-round match after six days without a competitive set.
- Hontama won two China Open qualifying matches to reach the Beijing main draw.
- She beat Alexandra Panova 7-5, 6-1 and Jodie Anna Burrage 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.
- Katie Boulter, ranked No. 56, beat her 6-3, 6-4 in the first round .

Suzhou is a WTA 125 rather than a tour-level event, so the ranking points and prize money at stake are smaller than at the WTA 1000 in Beijing where Hontama played last week. This is the opening round of a 32-player draw, which means no accumulated workload inside the event for either player and no seeding protection for either of them. Because both players have spent the past two weeks on hard courts in China, the surface and travel adjustment is limited and the match turns on current form rather than conditions.
- The event is a WTA 125 in Suzhou, China, with a $115,000 prize fund played on hard courts.
- Jones and Hontama are drawn against each other in the round of 32, the tournament's first round.
- The match is scheduled for October 6, 2026, the same week as the WTA 1000 event in Beijing.
