Context last updated 28 Sep 2026, 15:35 · Europe/Bucharest

One win puts either man in the Tokyo main draw, and Tsitsipas, a former world No. 3 now ranked No. 44, is the clear favourite against alternate Rinky Hijikata, who has never taken a set from him.

A straight-sets Tsitsipas win is the likeliest finish, but 1.38 on him asks for more than that form supports. The one price that holds up is Hijikata with a 2.5-game head start at 2.20.

Context

Tsitsipas, 27, is a former world No. 3 and two-time Grand Slam finalist now ranked No. 44, and that slide is why he is in a Tokyo qualifying draw a player of his record would normally skip. His 7-5 6-2 win over Yoshihito Nishioka, the event's opening day, left him one victory from the main draw, with Hijikata the last opponent standing in the way. The stakes are therefore asymmetric: for Tsitsipas this is a ranking-recovery step rather than a routine early-week match, while Hijikata is chasing the same main-draw place from the alternate list.
- Tsitsipas beat Yoshihito Nishioka 7-5 6-2 in the first round of qualifying .
- Tsitsipas is ranked No. 44 and one win now separates him from a main-draw place at an ATP 500.

Persistent rain has disrupted the start of the Kinoshita Japan Open, and forecasts of an approaching typhoon raised the possibility that qualifying matches would be moved to indoor courts. A change of court matters because indoor hard courts play faster and with lower bounce than the outdoor courts at Ariake, which affects how both players build points and how much a server can be attacked. Tsitsipas took to the indoor practice courts after arriving while the opening days were being rearranged by rain. The forecast is unresolved, so the court and conditions for the final qualifying round are not yet fixed.
- The tournament's opening days, including qualifying, were played under persistent rain in the last week of September 2026.
- Indoor courts were flagged as the contingency if the outdoor schedule at Ariake could not be completed.
- Tsitsipas practised indoors at the venue after arriving .

Hijikata, 25, got into the Tokyo qualifying draw as an alternate and made it count, beating Camilo Ugo Carabelli 6-2 6-3 to reach the final qualifying round. The result fits his profile, since hard courts are his preferred surface and he sits at No. 82, but his recent hard-court form is uneven: he beat Dalibor Svrcina in straight sets in Hangzhou before a 6-3 6-3 loss to Andrey Rublev in the round of 16. The reward is concrete, as the winner of this match takes a main-draw place, the same prize Tsitsipas is chasing.
- Hijikata beat Camilo Ugo Carabelli 6-2 6-3 in the Tokyo qualifying first round .
- Hijikata was added to the Tokyo qualifying entry list as an alternate in the week before the event.

Tsitsipas's presence turned a first-round qualifying match into one of the opening day's main draws at Ariake, and his 7-5 6-2 win over home player Yoshihito Nishioka was staged with a courtside interview, an arrangement normally reserved for main-draw matches. It places unusual attention on a qualifying round and on Tsitsipas in particular, while Hijikata advanced with no comparable spotlight attached to his match. This is occasion and atmosphere rather than an indication about either player's condition or preparation.
- Attendance at the tournament's first qualifying day was unusually strong for a qualifying round.
- A courtside interview followed the Tsitsipas–Nishioka qualifying match .
