Context last updated 27 Sep 2026, 22:09 · Europe/Bucharest

Hijikata's hard-court record and a straight-sets win over Ugo Carabelli in their only meeting point to him advancing, but he has dropped six of ten opening sets on this surface.

Ugo Carabelli's own form is poor — one win in five hard-court matches. Three quoted prices carry assessed value, all on Ugo Carabelli: first set at 2.9, second set at 2.75, or the match at 3.5. Hijikata at 1.3 offers little.

Context

Qualifying is played on 28-29 September and the main draw only starts on 30 September, so this match is the first of two qualifying steps for both men rather than a place already banked. The field around them includes a 2024 champion and several other top-100 players, so the winner's second match is likely to be against tour-level opposition, with a main-draw field that has already lost Fonseca and Shelton to injury. The two arrive with very different preparation, however: Hijikata had two matches in Hangzhou in the preceding week, while Ugo Carabelli had played only once in more than three weeks, so the occasion rather than the round guarantees the level.
- Singles qualifying at the Japan Open runs 28-29 September at Ariake Colosseum and Ariake Tennis Forest, with the main draw from 30 September to 6 October.
- Arthur Fils, the 2024 Tokyo champion, plays this year's tournament from the qualifying draw.
- Hijikata and Ugo Carabelli are among the players ranked inside the top 105 filling that qualifying draw.
- João Fonseca and Ben Shelton withdrew from the main draw with injuries.

Hijikata's opening sets have been the weaker half of his hard-court matches in this window.
That split is the clearest reason the underdog's price to take the first set carries value, and it fits a run of five tiebreaks across those ten matches. His second sets sit level at 5-5, so a slow start has not always decided the match. The sample is ten matches, enough for a pattern rather than a rule.
- Hard-court set record in this window: 10 completed matches from 28 July to 25 September 2026, 4-6 in first sets and 5-5 in second sets.
- Opening sets averaged 4.3 games won and 5.3 lost; five of the ten matches featured a tiebreak.
A doubles main-draw place gives Hijikata a second route onto court at the same venue and alongside a Japanese partner, while he starts the singles event in qualifying. In practical terms it means potential additional court time across the week and a guaranteed match if he does not come through the singles qualifying draw. It has no bearing on how the singles qualifying match itself is played.
- The Japan Open doubles main-draw places include the pairing of Rinky Hijikata and Kaito Uesugi.
- The doubles places were announced together with the singles wild cards .

The defeat came against a late replacement rather than an expected opponent, so the scoreline describes one disrupted day more than a settled level. It still leaves Ugo Carabelli without a win and with a single match behind him in the opening week of the Asian swing, which is thin preparation for a hard-court qualifier. The counterpoint is that Chengdu conditions and an unfamiliar opponent on short notice are not a reliable guide to how he will play in Tokyo.
- Federico Cina beat Camilo Ugo Carabelli 6-3 6-2 in the Chengdu first round.
- Cina entered the Chengdu draw as a lucky loser following a withdrawal.
- Ugo Carabelli's previous completed match was a first-round loss on 1 September.
