Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 27 Sep 2026, 22:08 · Europe/Bucharest

Tsitsipas, a former world No. 3 now ranked 44, must beat home player Nishioka to keep his Tokyo qualifying week going.

He is the stronger player and the likely winner, but Nishioka won the opening set in 11 of his 14 tracked hard-court best-of-3 matches, and that sample ends in February 2026 against mostly lower-ranked opponents. Tsitsipas at 1.05 asks for a 95% chance the evidence does not support; Nishioka at 9.5 is the one reviewed price with a positive edge.

Context

Tsitsipas's ranking has fallen far enough that reaching an ATP 500 main draw now requires winning qualifying, so this opener decides main-draw entry rather than ranking points alone. A player who spent five consecutive years in the top 10 must win two matches just to take his place in the main draw, and a loss ends his Tokyo week immediately. Because it is a qualifying round, there is no seeded protection and no second chance.
- Tsitsipas is in the Tokyo ATP 500 qualifying draw and drawn against Nishioka in the first qualifying round
- The fixture is listed as the opening match of the day at 11:00 local time on 28 September 2026
- His ranking has fallen outside the top 40 from a career-high No. 3
ReportedSources checked 27 Sep 2026, 22:06 · Europe/Bucharest
Recent evidence points to compact sets rather than long, dragged-out matches, and four of the eight contained a tiebreak. The sample ends on 26 August 2026, so it describes one block of form and does not cover his September hard-court matches.
- 8 hard-court best-of-3 matches, 29 July to 26 August 2026
- Seven of the eight finished in straight sets (four 2-0 wins, three 0-2 losses)
- Average total games 22.9, with first sets at 10.4 and second sets at 11.4
- Four of the eight matches featured a tiebreak
If he is to trouble a higher-ranked opponent, starting well is the phase that has held up, and only two of those 14 matches reached a tiebreak. The sample is small, ends in February 2026 and excludes one retired match, so it reads as a recent pattern rather than a current guarantee.
- 14 hard-court best-of-3 matches, 25 October 2025 to 14 February 2026
- Set 1: 11 wins, 3 losses; set 2: 9 wins, 5 losses
- Two of the 14 matches featured a tiebreak
- One retired match excluded from the sample
This is the clearest current statement on how Nishioka is managing his body coming into his home ATP 500, and it follows a 2026 season that included a retirement in January and a ranking slide outside the top 200. He sets a season-long intention rather than reporting a present problem, so the comment reads as context on his workload management rather than confirmation of an injury affecting this match.
- Nishioka said avoiding injury-forced absences is his goal for his age-31 season
- He practised with Shintaro Mochizuki ahead of the Tokyo qualifying round
- His birthday fell
