Miomir Kecmanovic #62Serbia00 – 2Nikoloz Basilashvili #132Georgia2

Kecmanovic's only competitive tennis since late August was indoors in Niš, so Chengdu is his first exposure to these faster outdoor courts and to roughly 500 m altitude. The five-day gap since that rubber covered a Europe-to-Asia trip rather than recovery or a practice block on site. That is why an 85-place ranking advantage over Basilashvili does not translate automatically into a settled start, and there is no completed match on these courts for him to point to. The counterpoint is his tour-level résumé, which is why the ranking gap and the preparation gap point in different directions.

The retirement came at the end of five defeats in six matches and it is the only physical interruption in his Chengdu build-up. His response is the strongest current evidence available on his condition: two qualifying matches completed in straight sets, including a 6-2 6-0 win. The specific risk is workload rather than history, because a 34-year-old asking for a third match in three days in heat, humidity and mild altitude faces a longer physical test than his opponent does. A fitness question raised eight days before this fixture is therefore being retested immediately rather than at a comfortable distance.

Chengdu is the stop on Basilashvili's calendar where he carries a ranking block to defend, so a first-round exit costs him the quarterfinal points he collected here in 2025 rather than simply ending a week. Venue familiarity also sits with him: across the 2025 and 2026 editions his only defeat came against Lorenzo Musetti. The limitation is what that record is built on, since his 2026 wins came in qualifying against Federico Cina and Hanlei Lu rather than top-100 opposition. The venue record establishes comfort with the setting, not current form at the level that produced it.
