Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 22 Sep 2026, 22:52 · Europe/Bucharest

A place in the Chengdu Open main draw is at stake, and Federico Cina arrives with the better hard-court record against Nikoloz Basilashvili, the higher-ranked player who won his opener 6-2 6-0.

Cina is the more likely winner, most plausibly in straight sets. None of the quoted prices — Cina at 1.65, a two-set match at 1.5, or Basilashvili at 2.25 — is worth backing.

Context

Basilashvili stopped during his opening match at the Guangzhou Challenger : he had won the first set 6-2 and held two match points at 6-4 in the second-set tiebreak against Naoya Honda before losing it and retiring at one set all. He had already taken a medical timeout for a foot problem in that match, and it was his second retirement inside 15 matches. The counterweight is that he then won his Chengdu opener 6-2 6-0 without a reported recurrence, so the retirement reads as a recent physical signal rather than a restriction currently visible in his play.
- Retired at one set all after losing the second-set tiebreak 7-6(6), having held two match points at 6-4 up in the tiebreak.
- Took a medical timeout for a foot problem earlier in the same match.
- The Guangzhou retirement was his second in his last 15 matches, alongside a 6-1 2-1 retirement against Raul Brancaccio on 30 June 2026.
- Beat Hanlei Lu 6-2 6-0 in Chengdu qualifying round one .

Cina has been the more regularly tested of the two on hard courts in this window, and his matches have tended to take time to resolve.
That longer-match pattern is the main argument against a quick two-set finish here, and it is the risk attached to the straight-sets lean. Basilashvili's own three completed hard-court matches all ended in two sets, so the two small samples point in different directions.
- Seven completed hard-court best-of-3 matches from 3 August to 22 September 2026, averaging 2.43 sets and 24.3 total games per match.
- Scorelines in that sample: two 2-0 wins, two 2-1 wins, two 0-2 losses and one 1-2 loss, so three of the seven went to a decider.
- Two of the seven matches contained a tiebreak, and one retirement is excluded from the sample.
The winner of this second qualifying round moves into the Chengdu Open main draw while the loser's week ends, so the match is a step up in event level rather than a routine ranking-points exercise. It is listed on Court 2 on 23 September, a day after both players won their opening qualifying matches in straight sets. With Basilashvili at No. 145 and Cina at No. 170, the 25-place gap is a narrow separation for a qualifying draw, and the main-draw place is the same prize for both.
- Listed as the Chengdu Open qualifying final, second qualifying round, on Court 2 on 23 September 2026.
- Basilashvili beat Hanlei Lu 6-2 6-0 in qualifying round one .
- Cina beat Kaichi Uchida 6-1 6-2 in qualifying round one .

Cina came through three US Open qualifying rounds in August, winning the final round against Bu Yunchaokete 3-6 6-4 7-5 after a 7-5 third set against Hugo Dellien in the previous round, and he lost to Alex Michelsen in the main draw. It was the second Slam qualifying run he completed in 2026 after Roland Garros, which is a better guide to his current level than the 25-place ranking gap to Basilashvili. The limitation is that the run finished a month ago: his most recent match before Chengdu was a 4-6 1-6 loss to James Kent Trotter in Guangzhou on 16 September.
- Beat Hugo Dellien 6-3 5-7 7-5 and Bu Yunchaokete 3-6 6-4 7-5 to reach the US Open main draw.
- The final qualifying round against Bu was postponed by rain and played on Court 6 .
- Passing Slam qualifying for the second time in 2026, after Roland Garros.
- Lost in straight sets to Alex Michelsen in the US Open first round.
