Luca Castelnuovo holds a slight edge over Ji Sung Nam due to better recent hard-court form and a stronger first serve.

The match is expected to be competitive, with value on Castelnuovo moneyline (around 1.73) and over 21.5 total games. Castelnuovo's high ace count also makes over 10.5 total aces an attractive angle.

Context

Luca Castelnuovo, ATP No. 461, is the left-handed player in this quarter-final. He retired from a match on 1 September, then completed three Shanghai matches on 7, 8 and 10 September.
The retirement is recent enough to note, but Castelnuovo has since played three full matches without issue, including a three-set win on 8 September. That suggests the problem was not serious and he is fit to compete. His current tournament run gives him match sharpness, and the linked analysis sees his serve and hard-court form as an edge over Nam.

Nam, 33, is a right-hander ranked 768 who has spent most of his career on hard courts. Castelnuovo, 27, is a left-hander ranked 461 with a one-handed backhand and a strong recent hard-court record.
Nam has won four consecutive matches at this tournament, including a straight-sets win over No. 157 Rei Sakamoto. Castelnuovo has won three straight, beating No. 221 Chun Hsin Tseng in three sets. Both are playing with confidence, so the match is likely to be competitive and decided by small margins.
- Nam's last four matches: W vs Yevseyev (444), W vs Sakamoto (157), W vs Uesugi (897), W vs Charlton (755).
- Castelnuovo's last three matches: W vs Wu (370), W vs Tseng (221), W vs Huang (628).
- Nam's last-15 hard-court record is 7-6; Castelnuovo's is 6-4.
Castelnuovo's left-handed serve and one-handed backhand give him natural variety. Nam's serve is more modest, averaging 3.7 aces per match.
Castelnuovo's first-serve points won (73%) is higher than Nam's (68.8%), and his ace rate is more than double. If Castelnuovo serves well, he can put pressure on Nam's return game, which has been below average at 39.8% return points won.
- Castelnuovo last-15: 7.9 aces per match, 73% first-serve points won.
- Nam last-15: 3.7 aces per match, 68.8% first-serve points won.
- Nam's return points won: 39.8% vs Castelnuovo's 35.4%.
Castelnuovo retired against Matthew Dellavedova on September 1 after losing the first two sets. He has since won three matches this week without apparent physical problems.
The retirement is a minor concern, but his subsequent results indicate he is fit enough to compete. Nam has no recent injury history, so fitness is unlikely to be a major factor unless Castelnuovo's condition worsens.
- Castelnuovo retired vs Dellavedova on 2026-09-01 (score: 4-6 6-3 4-1 ret.).
- Since then, Castelnuovo has won three matches without retiring.
