Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 22 Oct 2026, 07:05 · Europe/Bucharest

Jovic is the fresher player but the rustier one; Paolini has already won here this week after coming back from 0-5 down in her opener.

Jovic's hard-court numbers and her Melbourne win over Paolini make her the likely winner, probably in straight sets. The quoted prices — 1.45 on Jovic, 1.45 on under 2.5 sets, 1.5 on her taking either set, 2.1 on a 2-0 win — all ask more than her record justifies. None is worth backing.

Context

The most recent completed match between these two was a hard-court win for Jovic without a deciding set, which is why the gap between fourth seed and unseeded No. 35 is not the whole question here. Paolini's only fresh counter-evidence is her Ningbo opener, where she came back from 0-5 in the second set. The limitation is the nine-month gap and the change of setting: a Grand Slam fortnight in Melbourne tests different things from a 500-level second round in China, and both players' ranking and form have moved since.
- Jovic won the latest meeting between the two in straight sets at the Australian Open in January 2026.
- Neither player has faced the other since that match.
ConfirmedSources checked 22 Oct 2026, 07:04 · Europe/Bucharest
Paolini's previous completed match, in Wuhan on 15 October, ended with her losing the last 11 games of a 6-2 6-0 defeat; here she won seven in a row from 0-5 down, the first sign in a fortnight that a slide inside a match can be stopped. It matters because she meets a player who beat her the last time they played. The counterpoint is the slide itself: from 6-2 up she lost five straight games to a lucky loser ranked 51 who had retired during qualifying, so the level is intact while the match was still in serious danger.
- Paolini trailed 0-5 in the second set and then won seven consecutive games to close the match 6-2 7-5.
- Kalinina entered the main draw as a lucky loser, ranked No. 51.
- The match lasted one hour and 41 minutes, four days after Paolini's 6-2 6-0 loss to Sonay Kartal in Wuhan.

Jovic has not played a competitive point since 15 October, so her first outing of the week comes against someone who has already adjusted to the court and the balls. The gap follows two straight-set defeats in her last three completed matches, which makes the lack of match play a live question rather than a neutral fact. Paolini's counter is narrow but concrete: one completed match, one hour and 41 minutes, on the surface. The limitation is that the bye is a consequence of her fourth seeding, there is no reported injury or restricted practice behind the gap, and extra rest can be worth more than an early round for a player with her ball-striking.
- Jovic's most recent completed match was her 6-4 6-1 Wuhan round-of-16 loss to Maja Chwalinska on 15 October.
- Paolini completed a 6-2 7-5 first-round win, one hour and 41 minutes on the same outdoor hard court.
- This round-of-16 match opens Center Court at 13:00 local.
ConfirmedSources checked 22 Oct 2026, 07:04 · Europe/Bucharest
Jovic's hard-court results since mid-August have mostly been settled inside two sets.
Her 2-0 wins outnumber every other scoreline in that sample, and her first sets average 9.8 games, so most of her weeks close quickly. Paolini's hard-court matches average 2.2 sets, the clearest reason not to treat a short match here as automatic.
- Set evidence covers 15 completed hard-court matches from 16 August to 15 October 2026, with scorelines of 9-0-2-4 (2-0, 2-1, 1-2, 0-2).
- Two of those 15 matches contained a tiebreak.
- First sets averaged 9.8 total games, second sets 9.1.
