Tomas Machac #75Czechia11 – 2Liam Draxl #219Canada2

Draxl's route has included two qualifying rounds plus three-setters against Jasika and Ivashka, so he arrives with twice the match load of Machac, who has played two straight-sets matches. That matters because recovery between the second round and the quarterfinal is short, and a long week tends to surface later in an event. The counterpoint is that the four matches are spread across five days, which limits how much of a physical disadvantage the extra court time represents.

Machac reached the Jinan quarter-final with two straight-set wins but has been a slow starter across a larger hard-court sample.

Machac's two Jinan wins both opened with a set won, but across nine hard-court matches from 14 August to 15 October he has lost the first set six times and gone down 0-2 five times. Draxl has taken 11 of 15 opening sets in his own hard-court window, so the first set is where this quarter-final can turn. The counterweight: Draxl's four wins this week came against lower-ranked opposition.

Draxl, ranked 219, beat an opponent ranked 64 in straight sets, giving him a first-round result against a substantially higher-ranked player on hard court. It matters because his other wins this week came against a 422-ranked opponent and a qualifier, so Duckworth is the clearest single gauge of his current level. The limitation is that one result against the No. 64 does not close the wider gap to Machac, particularly given Draxl's record below tour level.
