Medvedev and Paul meet for a place in the Shanghai semifinal, with Medvedev holding the ranking edge, a 4-1 head-to-head lead and 13 wins from 15 recent hard-court matches.

Paul has not dropped a set this week, so the upset is live, but Medvedev looks the likelier winner. The quoted prices do offer something: Medvedev to win at 1.45, Medvedev in straight sets at 2.1, Medvedev by two games or more at 1.55 and Medvedev to take the first set at 1.5.

Context

This was Medvedev's first tour-level default, and it removed 200 ranking points in the middle of a close ATP Finals race, which raises the value of a deep Shanghai run. It also gives this quarterfinal a specific backdrop, coming in the same China swing and 11 days before the match. Because it is a conduct sanction rather than a physical problem, it bears on his circumstances and the points at stake rather than his fitness.
- Defaulted from the China Open semifinal against Novak Djokovic .
- Trailing 7-5, 5-3 when the default occurred.
- Forfeited approximately $219,000 in prize money and 200 ranking points.

Removing the defending champion is the strongest result of Paul's run and shows his return game has handled a high-level server on these courts; Vacherot had won 10 straight matches in Shanghai before this. The 6-4, 6-2 scoreline was more comfortable than the match itself, with the first set decided by a small number of break-point chances. Wins in straight sets over Vallejo, Vacherot and Bergs have left Paul with a slightly lighter workload than Medvedev, who dropped a set in his opener.
- Beat defending champion Valentin Vacherot 6-4, 6-2 in the third round .
- Ended Vacherot's 10-match winning streak in Shanghai.
- Has not dropped a set in three matches this week.

The Hangzhou title was won in the same China hard-court swing that leads into Shanghai, where Medvedev has since won three more matches. It establishes current form on these courts, but it came at ATP 250 level against a limited field, so it does not by itself show he has separated from top-20 opposition. The Beijing default interrupted that sequence before he arrived here.
- Won the 2026 Hangzhou Open final against Andrey Rublev 7-5, 6-4 .
- 24th career singles title and third of 2026.

Medvedev leads this head-to-head 4-1 and took the most recent meeting in straight sets.
The series points to Medvedev: four wins from five meetings, and a 6-4, 6-0 scoreline the last time the two played. Paul's only win came on 14 May 2024, also in straight sets, so this is not a clean sweep. Almost every meeting is at least a year old, which limits how much it says about current form.
- 11 March 2025: Medvedev won the most recent meeting 6-4, 6-0.
- Five recorded meetings: Medvedev four wins, Paul one win.
