Context last updated 13 Oct 2026, 15:39 · Europe/Bucharest

Two top-50 risers, five ranking places apart, meet for a place in the Wuhan round of 16, and the match turns on Snigur's steadier hard-court form against Tjen's bigger serve.

Snigur looks the likelier winner, probably in straight sets. The prices give little: 1.65 for Snigur to win is fair rather than generous, 1.65 for her to take either the first or second set asks too much, and Under 2.5 sets at 1.5 is no better. No reviewed price is worth backing.

Context

Mertens was the highest-ranked opponent Snigur has beaten in recent weeks and arrived from a deep Beijing run, so the straight-sets win is the clearest sign that Snigur's late-season hard-court level has travelled to Wuhan. It gives her a top-15 scalp immediately before facing Tjen, an opponent ranked five places below her. One match does not establish sustained form and Mertens had played a long week in Beijing, but the win keeps Snigur as the player in this pairing with recent success against the top of the draw.
- Snigur won the match 6-4, 7-5 .
- Mertens was the 14th seed and had reached the Beijing semi-final three days earlier.
- Snigur was making her Wuhan debut.

Tjen dropped only four games in her opener and was not extended, leaving her with a lighter first-round workload than Snigur, who had to beat a seed. The result extends a breakthrough season that has carried her to the edge of the top 50. Ito was ranked outside the top 300 and had already played qualifying, so the win is limited evidence of how Tjen will handle a top-50 opponent, but it removes any doubt about her comfort on these courts.
- Tjen won the opening round 6-3, 6-1 .
- Tjen had also beaten Ito in straight sets in 2025 US Open qualifying.
- Ito came through qualifying and was ranked outside the top 300.

This run is the strongest recent evidence behind Snigur's rise: she won a WTA 1000 match from a set down against a top-15 seed and reached the fourth round at that level for the first time. It matters here because Beijing and Wuhan are the same outdoor hard-court swing, so she has already shown she can beat seeded opposition on these courts. The limitation is that Andreeva then beat her comfortably, and Snigur lost the opening set in both of her Beijing wins, so slow starts have been a repeated feature.
- Snigur beat Paolini after losing the first set and trailing 2-4 in the second-set tiebreak.
- She then beat Taylah Preston 6-0, 6-1 to reach the fourth round.
- Andreeva won their fourth-round meeting 6-2, 6-2.

The comeback showed Tjen can win a tight three-setter against a top-50 opponent, taking the last two games after Kalinina had served for the match. The follow-up, a straight-sets loss to Shnaider in which she won only four games, is the more recent measure of her level against the higher-ranked part of the draw. Against Snigur, who is only marginally higher-ranked but has just beaten a top-15 seed, that recent result tempers the case for Tjen.
- Kalinina served for the match at 5-4 in the second set and could not close it out.
- Tjen then lost to Diana Shnaider 0-6, 4-6.
