Context last updated 12 Oct 2026, 03:42 · Europe/Bucharest

Mertens, the 14th seed, comes off a Beijing semifinal that included wins over Ostapenko, Gauff and Swiatek, but her 1.45 price is not worth taking against an opponent fresh from a first WTA 1000 round of 16.

Mertens is still the likelier winner. The one price that offers value is Snigur at 2.75, at medium confidence.

Context

Three wins over major champions in a single event, all on outdoor hard courts, is the strongest recent form in this matchup. The run lasted five singles matches across the week, including a 2:54:30 opener that went the distance. The limitation is that it ended in a straight-sets defeat on 10 October, so the question is whether that level travels to a first-round match three days later.
- Mertens beat Jelena Ostapenko, Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek in successive Beijing matches
- She lost the semifinal 7-5, 6-2 to Qinwen Zheng on 10 October
- Her Beijing opener against Katie Volynets lasted 2:54:30 and finished 6-0, 4-6, 7-5
- She beat Swiatek 7-6(0), 6-3 without facing a break point

Snigur's Beijing run took her past the second round at a WTA 1000 for the first time, and it included a win over a top-15 seed from a set down. That is the clearest evidence she is playing above the ranking that makes her the underdog in this fixture. The limitation is that the run ended in a one-sided defeat to a top-five opponent, so her level against the very top of the draw is still unproven. She arrives with more recent wins than her ranking suggests.
- Snigur had never gone beyond the second round at a WTA 1000 before Beijing
- She beat No. 14 seed Jasmine Paolini 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-2 after recovering from 2-4 down in the second-set tie-break
- She defeated Taylah Preston 6-1, 6-0
- Mirra Andreeva ended the run 6-2, 6-2

Snigur's returning has been the part of her game carrying her results through the recent hard-court swing.
Snigur's last 15 matches show 49.2% break-point conversion against 38.6% for Mertens, and she also leads the return-points-won comparison, 45.3% to 42.4%. That is a practical route into a match where she starts as the underdog. The counterweight is Mertens' 70.4% of first-serve points won on hard, the strongest single number in the matchup.
- Snigur has converted 60 of 122 break points (49.2%) across 15 matches
- Mertens has converted 49 of 127 (38.6%) across 15 matches
- Snigur has won 45.3% of return points, Mertens 42.4%
Mertens' recent hard-court matches have tended to run long, which matters given how much tennis she has played.
Mertens' 15 hard-court matches from 7 August to 10 October averaged 22.2 games and 2.47 sets, with seven going to a deciding set. Only two of those matches contained a tiebreak, so the extra games came from service breaks rather than shootouts. That is the length profile she brings into a first round played three days after a five-match Beijing week.
- Mertens played 15 hard-court matches between 7 August and 10 October 2026
- She averaged 22.2 total games and 2.47 sets per match
- Seven of the 15 went to a deciding set (four 2-1 wins, three 1-2 losses)
- Only two of the 15 matches featured a tiebreak
