Pre-match view

Context last updated 11 Oct 2026, 23:18 · Europe/Bucharest

The tension is ranking against readiness: No.

49 Janice Tjen has not played since 2 October and is 5-7 on hard courts in this window, while No. 361 Aoi Ito has just won two qualifying matches at this venue. Tjen is still the likelier winner, but not at 1.35. Ito to win at 3.2, Ito with a 2.5-game start at 2.4, the match going to a deciding set at 2.6 and over 22.5 games at 2.2 all offer something.

Context

Tjen won the only previous meeting 6-1, 6-2 in the third round of 2025 US Open qualifying, and the two have not played since. The caveat is meaningful: Ito was the higher-ranked player then, inside the Top 100, and carried a back problem in that match that was later diagnosed as a lumbar stress fracture and ended her season, while Tjen was outside the Top 150. The surface link is concrete rather than incidental, since Wuhan uses the same Laykold hard court and Wilson US Open Regular Duty balls as Flushing Meadows. The rematch therefore tests how much of that one-sided score reflected Ito's injury rather than the matchup.
- Tjen won the 2025 US Open qualifying third round 6-1, 6-2
- Ito carried a back problem in that match that was later diagnosed as a lumbar stress fracture
- Wuhan uses the same Laykold hard court and Wilson US Open Regular Duty balls as the 2025 US Open

Ito beat Alycia Parks and Magdalena Frech in straight sets to qualify, with Frech the third seed in qualifying and ranked No. 48, more than 300 places above Ito. That is two completed matches on the Wuhan courts, a top-50 win, and the sixth tour-level main draw she has reached in 2026, which speaks to a rebuilt competitive level. The limitation is that qualifying form and main-draw form are different thresholds: Tjen sits at No. 49 and has recent hard-court wins over Anhelina Kalinina and Dayana Yastremska, so the scalps show Ito's recovery is real without settling the level gap in this match.
- Beat Alycia Parks, ranked No. 70, 6-4 6-1
- Beat Magdalena Frech, ranked No. 48 and third seed in qualifying, 7-6(3) 6-4
- The qualifying run is her sixth tour-level main draw of 2026

Tjen's 12 completed hard-court matches from 27 July to 2 October produced six straight-set defeats and only two straight-set wins, with three of her victories needing a deciding set. The matches also run long: 23.9 games on average, and seven of the 12 contained a tiebreak. That is the form line behind a first round against an opponent who has just played twice on these courts, so a wide winning margin is harder to assume than the ranking gap suggests.
- Tjen played 12 completed hard-court matches between 27 July and 2 October 2026.
- Scorelines: 0-2 six times, 2-1 three times, 2-0 twice and 1-2 once.
- Her matches averaged 23.9 games and 2.33 sets, and seven of the 12 included a tiebreak.
Oleksandra Oliynykova, originally drawn against Tjen, is out of the Wuhan main draw with a right ankle injury, and qualifier Ito filled the place in that first-round match. The change matters because Tjen's opponent profile shifted late: Ito is a former Top 100 player arriving with two completed qualifying wins, not the opponent the original draw named. Preparation is the practical consequence, since scouting and first-round tactics would have been built around the original name. The update comes from the amended draw rather than a formal statement, so the exact replacement mechanism is read from the bracket.
- Oliynykova was listed against Tjen in the first round before the draw update
- Oliynykova is marked out with a right ankle injury in the amended Wuhan main draw
- Ito appears opposite Tjen in the updated draw
