Pre-match view

Context last updated 9 Oct 2026, 03:13 · Europe/Bucharest

Seedings and hard-court form lean to Martinez, but Llamas Ruiz keeps matches close.

Martinez, ranked 130 and 5-2 on hard in this window, is the likelier winner over the 144th-ranked Llamas Ruiz, who needed three sets against a qualifier. Three quoted prices on Martinez offer something: 2.30 for the match and 2.20 in each set, with the first set the thinnest edge. Llamas Ruiz's 1.55 match price and 1.60 set prices are ones to leave alone.

Context

The draw placed the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds in the same quarter-section, so one of the two Spaniards is guaranteed a semi-final place at a Challenger 100 played in their home country. The stakes are concrete: the winner is two matches from a 100-point title, while the loser leaves Villena at the quarter-final stage after both had already banked two wins. Martinez, 29, was seeded one place above Llamas Ruiz, 23, and ranks 14 places higher at No. 130 against No. 144, so the seeding gap and the ranking gap point the same way while remaining narrow. The last eight also contains several other Spaniards, which is why this section is drawing local attention rather than functioning as a quiet early-week match.
- Quarter-final pairing confirmed as [4] Pedro Martinez vs [5] Pablo Llamas Ruiz
- Martinez beat alternate Daniel Rincon 7-5 6-4 in the second round
- Llamas Ruiz beat qualifier Petr Nesterov 3-6 7-6(5) 6-3 in the second round
- Three Spaniards, including Llamas Ruiz and Martinez, reached the last eight of the Villena Challenger

Martinez is part of Spain's current Davis Cup group and shared the doubles win that sent the team to the Final 8 in Bologna, which is the most significant result on his recent record and sits between two clay-court Challenger events. It matters here because it shows he is being selected and winning in national-team tennis immediately before arriving in Villena. The counterweight is format and surface: the decisive 6-0 6-3 win was a doubles match on clay in Santiago rather than a singles result, and his singles ranking has moved from a career-high No. 36 in February 2025 to No. 130, so the Davis Cup week speaks to his current competitive level rather than a return to his 2025 singles peak.
- Martinez partnered Jaume Munar in the doubles and won 6-0 6-3
- The doubles point confirmed Spain's qualification for the Davis Cup Final 8 in Bologna
- Spain completed a 3-0 win over Chile in Santiago
- The tie was played on 19- under captain David Ferrer

Pablo Llamas Ruiz's hard-court sample since late July is the larger of the two on show here, and it shows a player whose matches tend to stretch.
Six of Llamas Ruiz's 11 hard-court matches have contained a tiebreak and five have gone to a deciding set, so short work has not been his pattern. He has also won six of 11 opening sets, which makes the first set closer than the match picture suggests. He has still won more than he has lost on the surface and reached this quarter-final with a comeback win over a qualifier.
- Hard-court record of 6-5 in 11 tracked matches between 21 July and 8 October 2026
- Total games average 24.7 per match, with a tiebreak in 6 of 11
- Five of the 11 matches went to a deciding set: four 2-0 wins, two 2-1 wins, two 0-2 losses and three 1-2 losses
- First-set record 6-5 and second-set record 7-4, with second sets averaging 10.6 games
This is the player's own reading of the season that produced his career-best ranking, given on site during the tournament week rather than after a result. He frames the year around consistency rather than any single result, which is worth setting against the surface he is competing on here: clay is his listed preference, yet 12 of his last 15 matches have come on hard courts, including both wins in Villena. The mark is self-assessed and he attached no physical condition, injury or opponent to it, so it describes how he rates his form rather than a change in his state.
- Llamas Ruiz gave his 2026 season a mark of 7.5 or 8 out of 10
- He said the reason was that he has been much more consistent this year
- The interview was recorded at the Villena Challenger
- He is seeded fifth at the event
