Context last updated 6 Oct 2026, 00:36 · Europe/Bucharest

Fery, No.37, meets 38-year-old Cilic in the Shanghai first round, with Cilic 1-2 on hard this season and no listed match since 14 August.

Fery looks the stronger side, though Cilic has won all three of his opening sets on hard, so the first set may be tight. Fery to win at 1.73, Fery 2-1 in sets at 4.25, Fery for the second set at 1.73 and Fery -1.5 games at 1.85 all hold up; 1.65 on Fery in the first set and the unders are too short.

Context

Fery's level jumped in July 2026 when a Wimbledon wildcard carried him to the semifinals, including two five-set comebacks and a win over a top-10 seed. That fortnight lifted him from No.185 into the top 40 and made him the highest-profile British man on tour. It is the clearest evidence that his ceiling sits well above his No.37 ranking, but the run came on grass rather than the hard courts of the Asian swing, so it does not transfer directly to Shanghai conditions.
- Fery reached the 2026 Wimbledon semifinals as a wildcard.
- The run lifted him from No.185 to the top 40 in the space of a fortnight.
- It featured two consecutive five-set comeback victories and a win over a top-10 seed.

Cilic's opening sets have been the strong part of a hard-court season that has otherwise gone against him.
Fery has split his first sets 4-4 across eight completed hard best-of-3 matches, so the opener may be tighter than the 43-place ranking gap suggests. Cilic's numbers come from only three matches, two of which he lost, so a fast start has not converted into wins. The pattern points to a competitive first set.
- Cilic won the first set in all three hard-court matches tracked this season.
- Across those three matches he averaged 6.67 first-set games won and 4.67 lost.
- Fery's first-set record in eight completed hard best-of-3 matches is 4-4, averaging 5 games won and 4.75 lost.
The gap between Cilic's first and second serve is the sharpest split in his 15-match sample.
Holding serve has depended on Cilic landing the first delivery: only 57.1% have gone in across the 15 matches, and just 47.6% of the resulting second-serve points have been won. Fery's return numbers are not in the supplied record, so how hard he can press that second serve is unknown. These are 15 tracked matches, not a full-season rate.
- Cilic's last-15 sample covers 15 matches with 57.1% first serves in (656 of 1148).
- He won 71.2% of first-serve points (467 of 656) and 47.6% of second-serve points (234 of 492).
- He averaged 5.6 aces and 2.9 double faults per match across those 15 matches.
Both men are unseeded, so this opener carries full ranking value for each of them: the winner reaches the round of 64 in a 96-player field where the top 32 seeds have byes. Fery enters at No.37 against Cilic at No.80, a 43-place gap that separates two players at very different career stages. The match is set for 7 October, the first day of main-draw play at the Qizhong venue.
- Fery and Cilic are scheduled to meet in the round of 128 at the 2026 Shanghai Masters on 7 October.
- The pairing is listed among the notable first-round matches of the Shanghai draw.
- Both players are unseeded in a 96-player field in which the 32 seeds receive first-round byes.
