Context last updated 2 Oct 2026, 03:47 · Europe/Bucharest

Kartal returns from a six-month lower-back layoff to face the home seed in Beijing.

Wang, ranked No. 38 and seeded No. 31, is the likelier winner, but she has dropped two of her last five completed matches, most recently to a player ranked No. 123. Wang at 1.95 is the one reviewed price worth taking; Kartal at 1.85 asks more than her case justifies.

Context

Kartal had not won a tour-level singles match since March, and a lower-back injury forced her retirement against Elena Rybakina at Indian Wells that month, so a completed straight-sets win in Beijing resolves the immediate question of whether she could compete this week. It turns this fixture into a match against a fit, tournament-active player rather than an uncertain entrant coming back cold. The limitation is that one 6-2, 6-3 win over a qualifier ranked No. 137 does not show the back tolerates the longer, heavier exchanges a higher-ranked opponent is likely to force.
- Beat qualifier Andrea Lázaro García 6-2, 6-3 in the China Open first round
- Had been out for about six months with a lower-back injury sustained at Indian Wells in March 2026
- The win was her first singles victory since March 2026

Beijing is Wang's home WTA 1000 tournament and she is the seeded player in this pairing, so the local-support and familiarity context sits on her side of the net. That is context rather than a demonstrated on-court edge, and home support is not evidence of a change in her level. The seeding and the ranking gap describe the expectations around her, not a guaranteed playing advantage.
- Kartal's next opponent is the No. 31 seed Xinyu Wang in the second round of the China Open in Beijing
- Wang is listed among the seeded Chinese players in the Beijing main draw of the 2026 China Open, which runs on hard courts from 30 September

Kartal has a completed match and a first read on the Beijing courts, while Wang begins her tournament at the second round. That is the one genuine scheduling difference in the fixture, and it is a normal consequence of the 96-player draw rather than an unusual circumstance. It could affect how quickly each player settles, but a single match of rhythm is not enough to establish that Kartal is the better prepared of the two.
- The match is in the round of 64 and scheduled for Saturday 3 October 2026
- Kartal beat Andrea Lázaro García in the first round; her next match is the second round against the No. 31 seed Xinyu Wang

This is Wang's most recent completed tournament and gives a fresh read on her hard-court level before Beijing: a straight-sets win over a former top-20 opponent, followed by a three-set quarter-final loss to a lower-ranked qualifier. The mixed outcome is the point, since the win indicates her first-strike tennis was working while the loss shows it was not a clean week. It does not translate directly to this fixture, because the Singapore event was played indoors rather than outdoors.
- Wang beat Donna Vekić 6-1, 6-2 in the first round of the 2026 Singapore Tennis Open
- Wang reached the quarter-finals there, where she lost to Tatiana Prozorova in three sets
