Context last updated 29 Sep 2026, 19:04 · Europe/Bucharest

Kartal's stronger hard-court record meets her six-month layoff against a qualifier who has already won twice in Beijing.

Kartal looks the likelier winner, and a two-set finish is the more likely shape of the match. No selection in the reviewed markets is worth backing.

Context

Kartal has one completed match since March: a 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-4 loss to Marie Bouzkova in Shenzhen on 22 September, just under three hours of tennis in her first outing after six months out. The layoff removed the hard-court run that had carried her through the first quarter of the season, so her current level has to be read from that single match, in which she led early in the third set before losing the last four games. She arrives in Beijing without further competitive tennis behind her.
- Kartal had not competed since March before playing in Shenzhen on 22 September 2026.
- She lost 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-4 to Marie Bouzkova in two hours and 59 minutes, having led by an early break in the deciding set.
- She described herself as satisfied with her return to tennis despite Great Britain's 2-0 quarter-final defeat.
- Great Britain's 2-0 loss to Czechia ended their Billie Jean King Cup campaign.

Two qualifying wins give Lazaro Garcia four sets of hard-court tennis in Beijing and a place in a WTA 1000 main draw as a qualifier. The route started badly, with a 1-6 first set against 19-year-old Tian Jialin before she recovered to win in three, and Linda Fruhvirtova then took only four games. The trade-off is workload: she had already played twice in three days here, and this first round extends that run.
- Lazaro Garcia beat Tian Jialin 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 on hard court on 28 September 2026.
- She beat Linda Fruhvirtova 6-1, 6-3 in the qualifying final to enter the main draw.
- Her qualifying matches were scheduled on Courts 5 and 6 of the China Open in Beijing.
- The match is a China Open women's singles first round on hard court.

A foot problem was treated mid-match in Valencia, in the last event she played before this one. No physical issue has been documented since, and she won two qualifying matches in Beijing in the following eleven days, including a three-set opener, which limits how far this can be read as a current constraint. The detail is retained as a specific flag: a foot complaint during a long three-set match is worth watching if she is taken deep again in a main-draw week.
- Treatment on the foot was given during her Valencia quarter-final against Joelle Steur .
- The match was the quarter-final of the Valencia WTA 125, where she was the first Spanish player through to that round.
- She lost that Valencia quarter-final in three sets.
- She has since won both of her China Open qualifying matches.

Kartal's current ranking of No. 129 sits below the level she showed in that March window.
The result shows she can beat top-25 opposition on hard court, and she did it after dropping the opening set. The timing matters more than the scoreline here: it came six months before her only completed match since March, so it describes her form before the layoff rather than her level in Beijing. Against a qualifier ranked No. 137 it is a reason to give her the edge without treating it as current proof.
- 9 March 2026: beat Madison Keys (No. 23) 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 on hard court in a best-of-three match.
- Kartal lost the opening set 2-6 and then won the second and third 6-2, 6-3.
