Context last updated 1 Oct 2026, 03:20 · Europe/Bucharest

Eighth seed Guido Ivan Justo, ranked No. 239, meets a qualifier ranked No. 526 who has won 10 of his last 12 clay matches.

Justo's ranking and 2-1 head-to-head lead make him the likelier winner of this second-round meeting, but Pedro Sakamoto's serve and current clay form keep the gap narrow. The 1.44 on Justo asks for more than his 8-6 clay season supports; Sakamoto at 2.6, and at 2.4 to take either of the first two sets, is where the prices hold up.

Context

Sakamoto's ranking of No. 526 suggests a routine assignment for a seeded opponent, but he has now won three matches in four days on this clay, including a straight-sets win over Eduardo Ribeiro, who is ranked about 180 places higher. That ranking gap overstates the distance between them on current results. The caveat is that the wins came against a qualifier-level field and a first-round opponent outside the seeds, so the jump to a seeded Argentine is a different test.
- Sakamoto entered the Curitiba main draw through qualifying
- He beat Eduardo Ribeiro 6-3 6-4 in the first round
- Ribeiro is ranked roughly 180 places above Sakamoto

Sakamoto is carrying an unusual load: an M15 final on the morning of, a qualifying round that afternoon, a three-set qualifying decider the next day and a first-round main-draw win, plus a doubles match. Justo entered directly as the eighth seed and has played a single match this week, so the recovery gap between them is real. Heavier legs would show up most in a long clay match, and the risk is at least partly offset because Sakamoto has held his level through every one of those matches so far.
- Sakamoto was runner-up to Mateus Alves in the M15 Curitiba final
- He played a Challenger qualifying round the same day as the final
- He came from a set down and from 5-1 down in the third set to win the qualifying decider 2-6 6-2 7-6(5)
- He lost his Curitiba doubles match with partner L. Pereira 6-2 6-1

Justo came in as the higher-ranked player and the only seed in this pairing, and he got through his opener without dropping a set, so he carries no visible physical cost into the last 16. He has stayed on clay through the South American swing, which removes the surface and travel adjustments that can unsettle a ranking favourite at this level. The first set was decided by a tiebreak, so the scoreline flatters the comfort level of the win.
- Justo won his first-round match 7-6(6) 6-2
- He is the eighth seed at the Curitiba Challenger
- He is ranked No. 239 officially, with a live ranking of No. 233

Five of his six clay defeats were straight-set losses, and his average match lasted 21.1 games. For this second round that points to a match settled by small margins rather than an extended grind, which matters against an opponent carrying a heavy week. Two of the 14 matches did go the distance and the sample spans three months, so it is a tendency rather than a rule.
- Justo has played 14 completed clay matches between 2 July and 30 September 2026, going 8-6
- Eleven of those 14 finished in straight sets: six 2-0 wins and five 0-2 defeats
- Four of the 14 featured a tiebreak, and his average match lasted 21.1 games
