Context last updated 29 Sep 2026, 04:00 · Europe/Bucharest

Blockx returns from a rib retirement at the US Open with no completed match since 9 September, against a Vacherot who lost his Chengdu opener to a qualifier.

Recent hard-court results make Blockx the marginal favourite in a match that is close to even, and the 1.65 on him asks too much. Of the reviewed prices, Vacherot to win at 2.2 is the one worth taking; Under 2.5 sets at 1.55 and Under 24.5 games at 1.85 offer nothing.

Context

Blockx first felt the rib problem in the round of 16 and it ended his tournament two matches later, so the physical side of this first-round match is the least settled element of the fixture. Tokyo is his first competition since, which leaves no current evidence of how he holds up across a full tour-level match, and a first-round draw against a seeded opponent offers little room to manage a problem through the early rounds. His name also appears on the October Brussels entry list, which indicates an intended autumn schedule without confirming his condition now.
- Blockx retired in the 2026 US Open quarterfinal against Karen Khachanov on 9 September 2026 with Khachanov leading 6-2, 7-5, 3-2.
- He had been managing a rib problem since the round of 16 and took two medical timeouts before stopping.
- He has not played a tour-level match since that retirement, making Tokyo his return to competition.

Vacherot came to Chengdu as the first seed and left after one match, beaten by a qualifier in straight sets, so his most recent evidence on this swing is a defeat to a lower-ranked opponent. Against Blockx, who has not competed since 9 September, it gives Vacherot the only recent hard-court match time of the two. Chengdu is played at roughly 500 m altitude, though, so conditions there do not carry over directly to Tokyo.
- Lloyd Harris beat Vacherot 6-4, 7-6(5) in Chengdu, the top seed's opening match of the event.
- Harris came through qualifying and advanced to his first tour-level quarterfinal since 2023 with the win.
- Vacherot's next scheduled event was Tokyo the following week.

Vacherot starts well and gives ground later in this sample, which puts how he holds a lead or a split under scrutiny in Tokyo.
Three of his five first sets went his way, but four of five second sets did not, and those second sets ran to 10.8 games on average with two tiebreaks. In a best-of-three first round, that makes the middle phase of the match the least secure part of his recent record. The sample is five matches from 5 August to 26 September, and the most recent of them, the straight-sets loss in Chengdu, is one of the four second sets he dropped.
- Home hard-court best-of-three set sample: five completed matches, 5 August to 26 September 2026.
- First sets: 3 wins, 2 losses, 9.6 games per set on average, one tiebreak.
- Second sets: 1 win, 4 losses, 10.8 games per set on average, two tiebreaks.
The Shanghai Masters defence falls the week after Tokyo, so this first-round match opens a two-event Asian block rather than standing alone. It explains why a player ranked No. 18 is starting a 500-level event immediately before a Masters 1000 in which he carries the title, and it gives his Tokyo results a place in a longer sequence.
- Vacherot is the defending champion at the Shanghai Masters.
- His Tokyo appearance was announced as the event before the Shanghai defence, which follows on the October calendar.
