A No. 159 fifth seed against a Wimbledon doubles champion ranked No. 825: the gap and Costoulas' 11 of 15 first sets won on hard make her the likely winner here.

The catch is the price — 1.18 on her to win and 1.25 on the opening set ask more than that record justifies. Mladenovic +3.5 games at 2.9, a deciding set at 2.9 and over 21.5 games at 2.3 are the quoted prices with room.

Context

Mladenovic lost her Singapore WTA 500 opener to qualifier Nao Hibino 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, a tournament she entered as a main-draw player ranked around No. 822. Her tracked singles record over the past year is two wins and 13 losses, with both wins coming against opponents outside the top 250. The defeat continued that pattern and came a day before she began a doubles run in Singapore that leads directly into the Jingshan event. Her singles level, not her doubles standing, is the open question in this fixture.
- The Singapore WTA 500 first round ended 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 for qualifier Nao Hibino against Kristina Mladenovic
- Mladenovic was listed at No. 822 in the WTA 500 main draw
- Mladenovic moved from Singapore to the 125K event in Jingshan the following week
ConfirmedSources checked 28 Sep 2026, 15:40 · Europe/Bucharest
Mladenovic's Singapore tennis was described as pain-free and positive, a meaningful detail for a player whose 2026 season includes retirements against Fiona Ferro in February and Tiphanie Lemaitre in June. Availability, rather than peak level, is the key question for a player ranked in the 800s with only two wins in her last 15 singles matches. It is a single in-event detail and does not establish that she has returned to her previous standard.
- Mladenovic's Singapore week was covered as pain-free, positive tennis
- The WTA 500 in Singapore was her return to a main draw at that level
ReportedSources checked 28 Sep 2026, 15:40 · Europe/Bucharest
Fast starts have been the most dependable part of Costoulas' hard-court tennis, even when the match itself slipped away.
Starting well is the most reliable part of Costoulas' hard-court game: 11 of 15 first sets won between 19 July and 22 September 2026, with two of those opening sets going to tiebreaks. It has not settled her matches, since the same window contains five three-set losses and no won deciders. In a best-of-three first round, the opening set is her clearest edge and the third set her least certain ground.
- Costoulas won 11 of 15 first sets on hard between 19 July and 22 September 2026, losing four
- Her first sets in that window averaged 5.6 games won and 3.9 lost, with two tiebreaks in the 15 matches
The split is stark: Costoulas has finished her hard-court wins quickly and lost every match in this window that went the distance, five of them. Two sets is her natural route through this first round rather than a long grind. The corollary is that if Mladenovic takes one of the first two sets, this sample offers no evidence of Costoulas closing out a decider.
- Costoulas' 15 hard-court matches between 19 July and 22 September 2026 produced seven 2-0 wins, five 1-2 losses and three 0-2 losses
- Her hard-court matches in that window averaged 2.33 sets and 21.6 games
