Context last updated 22 Sep 2026, 17:53 · Europe/Bucharest

Duckworth and Sonego open their Chengdu campaigns with the recent head-to-head pointing one way and Sonego's serve the other.

Duckworth, 8-5 on hard in his last 13 completed matches, beat Sonego 7-5 6-3 on 26 August 2026, so he is the likelier winner. The quoted 2.2 on Duckworth to win, 2.05 on him to take the second set and 3.3 on a 2-0 win hold up; 1.73 on over 22.5 games does not.

Context

The only completed meeting between the two came, when Duckworth won in straight sets on the Winston-Salem hard courts and Sonego, the 2024 champion there, was unable to take a set. It gives this opener a concrete recent reference point for how the matchup behaves in similar conditions, rather than a bare head-to-head tally. The limitation is that the sample is one match, and Sonego's own level since then, leading the world No. 2 two sets to one at the US Open, argues against reading the straight-sets margin as a fixed pattern.
- Winston-Salem round of 16, : Duckworth beat Sonego 7-5 6-3
- The win took Duckworth into his first quarter-final of 2026
- Sonego won the Winston-Salem title in 2024

Duckworth walked on in Brisbane for Australia's Davis Cup tie on 19 September, then made the trip to Chengdu, while Sonego has been off court since a clay-court first-round loss . The two arrive with opposite versions of freshness: one with long-haul travel and competitive minutes in his legs, the other with a fortnight of rest but no match play. With no Chengdu matches behind either man, recovery and first-round adaptation are the live variables. The counterpoint is that Duckworth has already shown he can back up quickly this season, winning a four-set US Open match three days after retiring at Winston-Salem, so the compressed schedule has not visibly cost him results.
- Duckworth played a Davis Cup singles rubber against Kamil Majchrzak in Brisbane on 19 September 2026
- Duckworth's Winston-Salem week comprised four wins and a semi-final retirement against Arthur Fery at 6-4 1-2
- Duckworth won a four-set US Open first round against Matteo Arnaldi on 31 August 2026
- Sonego's most recent completed match was a first-round loss on clay

Sonego's most competitive hard-court match of this stretch was his US Open opener, when he led the world No. 2 two sets to one before losing in five. It matters here because it shows he can hold a high level against elite opposition deep into a match, the kind of resistance that decides tight opening sets on an outdoor hard court. The counterweight is conversion: he lost that match and then lost his next completed match on clay, so this reads as a level indicator rather than a run of results.
- US Open first round, : Zverev beat Sonego 6-4 3-6 6-7(7) 7-5 6-4
- Sonego led two sets to one
- Sonego had taken no sets from Zverev in their earlier meetings
ReportedSources checked 22 Sep 2026, 17:50 · Europe/Bucharest
Sonego's first serve is the part of his game that can hold a first-round set together on a hard court.
His serve is the route to cheap points in a first round where neither man has Chengdu form, and it explains why his matches stay close: he won 50.2% of total points across the same 15 matches while going 7-8. Against a player who has taken eight of his last 13 completed hard-court matches, the serve is more likely to force a tiebreak or steal a set than to settle the match on its own.
- Last 15 matches: 153 aces in 15 matches (10.2 per match) and 2.3 double faults per match
- First-serve points won 75.2% (720/958); second-serve points won 55.0% (271/493)
- Record over the same 15 matches: 7-8, with 50.2% of total points won (1440/2868)
- Hard-court splits in the tracked sample: 3-4 in 7 matches with 9.7 aces per match
