Context last updated 22 Oct 2026, 21:18 · Europe/Bucharest

Musetti arrives fresher, ranked 22 places higher, and has not dropped a set in Lyon; Van Assche has the home crowd, a comeback win over the third seed and a five-set victory in their only meeting.

Musetti should still win, but 1.44 to win the match and 1.5 for the first set are too short, and 1.5 for a straight-sets finish is close but thin. Van Assche at 2.75 is the one price worth taking.

Context

Beating the third seed is the strongest result of Van Assche's week and puts a home player into the quarterfinal having already handled a seeded opponent on this court. The comeback was built on serve: after losing the opening set 2-6 he steadied, created seven break points and converted three. It also marked a sharp upturn, since he had lost his previous two matches, to Bu Yunchaokete in Shanghai and to Arthur Fils. The limitation is the cost: the match ran two hours six minutes, while both of Musetti's wins this week finished in straight sets.
- Van Assche won 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in 2 hours 6 minutes
- He converted 3 of 7 break points and won 78% of points behind his first serve
- Vacherot was the third seed and ranked 32nd

This is Van Assche's third match in four days and his second in two, following a two-hour six-minute three-setter, while Musetti last played the previous evening and has dropped no sets, leaving roughly twice the recovery time before an evening start. Set count and court time are the clearest asymmetrical conditions around the fixture: four sets to six, and two short straight-set wins against a three-set grind. The effect is bounded rather than decisive: Van Assche is 22, his first round lasted two sets, and the schedule is tight rather than punishing, with no same-day double.
- Van Assche's round of 16 finished ; this quarterfinal starts on 23 October 2026
- Musetti's round of 16 finished
- Van Assche has played six sets in Lyon, Musetti four, with no sets dropped by Musetti

Musetti's season has been disrupted rather than continuous: he withdrew from Wimbledon and did not return until Washington on 27 July, and his ranking has slipped from a career-high No. 5 in January to 26th. A player saying his body has not felt this good all year is a meaningful signal in a quarterfinal against an opponent who has just spent two hours in a three-setter. The statement rests on one straight-set win over a wildcard ranked 194th and is the player's own assessment, not a measured condition. It does fit the shape of his week: two matches, four sets, none dropped.
- Musetti beat Moise Kouame 6-4, 6-4 in the Lyon round of 16 on 21 October 2026
- He said he had not felt physically well as in that match at any point in 2026
- He withdrew from Wimbledon in 2026 and returned in Washington on 27 July
ReportedSources checked 22 Oct 2026, 21:16 · Europe/Bucharest
A best-of-five hard-court match from January 2024 is limited evidence for an indoor best-of-three quarterfinal staged on a new court. What it does establish is that Van Assche has already beaten Musetti over five sets and finished emphatically, taking the last two sets 6-3, 6-0 after Musetti had edged the third-set tiebreak. Musetti was 21 at the time and has since reached a career-high No. 5, so that result predates his best season, while Van Assche is only now a top-50 regular. With a single meeting there is no surface or conditions pattern to read into it.
- The single tour meeting came in the second round of the 2024 Australian Open
- Van Assche won 6-3, 3-6, 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-0
- Van Assche took 12 of the last 15 games of the match
